The impact of small asteroid, that it reached the Baturité Massif, in the interior of Ceará, worried the residents of the region. The phenomenon was heard in the cities of Baturité, Redenção, Pacoti, Mulungu, Redenção, Palmácia and Guaramiranga this Saturday morning (10).

Erones Gelson, a resident of Guaramiranga, near Ladeira da Pendanga, was on the road when he heard about the accident. The first reaction, he says, was to stop the truck he was driving to see if it was a mechanical failure. “A great explosion. I thought it was a flat tire. It lasted between two and three minutes and it scared everyone, ”Erones recalls.

The phenomenon, previously unknown to families living in the region, according to Erones, left everyone unanswered. “We couldn’t even move to a corner because we didn’t know what was happening,” he concludes.

Also a 32-year-old resident of Lucielma Rodrigues, she hopes to receive more details about the noise. “A great explosion. I panic. We thought it was a car that had exploded. We are still very curious to know what happened. I was very afraid ”, adds the resident.

Phenomenon

According to an account by astronomer Lauriston Trindade, one of the members of the Brazilian Meteor Monitoring Network (Bramon), the object was sighted south of Fortaleza, near the Maciço region, and would have moved in a northwesterly direction.

“There was a loud explosion around 6:50 am, when several residents of the region heard this explosion. We believe it is a small asteroid that entered the Earth’s atmosphere through the Baturité massif. In Bramon we are collecting more data, we have some satellite images, which record the magnitude of this phenomenon. We are trying to collect more reports and videos to try to determine the trajectory, ”said the researcher.

For the astronomer, the size and impact of the object confirm that it is an asteroid.

“At one meter in diameter, it is already officially considered an asteroid. We will try to calculate its mass because there are infrasound stations all over the world that may have recorded this sound as well. It was a small asteroid, we are convinced by the magnitude, by the power it had, that it is a relatively large object ”, Trindade evaluated.

Weather satellite captures asteroid

Professor and astronomer Romário Fernandes told the Green Mares System that a geostationary meteorological satellite recorded the phenomenon.

“There is a satellite that is hundreds of kilometers above the Earth and it is a geostationary meteorological satellite for monitoring the climate. It orbits the Earth regularly for other purposes. And he captured that record. This blue (see photo) is indicative of the luminous phenomenon, the explosion that occurred around 6:50 am in the region ”, he explains.
