Acutis died of leukemia in 2006 and his beatification is scheduled for the next 10. At that moment, a desperate grandfather with a sick grandson, diagnosed with annular problems of the pancreas, took him to the parish of São Sebastião and touched a relic of Carlo. The relic would be clothing worn by the blessed that even contained the teenager’s blood. By touching the relic, the child would have been cured, according to Father Marcelo Tenório.
The beatification ceremony of Carlo Acutis will take place in the Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi. However, the body will remain in the Sanctuary of Espoliação and only one relic, a symbolic object of the sanctity of Acutis, will be taken to the place. Some 3,000 people are expected at the site.
After the beatification, the body of Acutis will remain open for visitation until the 17th. At the end, the tomb of the blessed will be closed.
Born in the UK to Italian parents, Carlo Acutis made his name by documenting and cataloging Eucharistic miracles and posting them on a website. Visits to the places where the miracles occurred began at the age of 11, in 2002, and continued until 2005, months before his death from leukemia, in October 2006.
In 2013, the same year the beatification process began, Acutis received the title of Servant of God, the first stage on the path to holiness. In July 2018, Pope Francis extolled his life of heroic virtues and named him “venerable.” The beatification was authorized by Pope Francis in February of this year.
