Circulates on social media that the Federal Supreme Court (STF), at the request of the PSOL, prevented the Ministry of Health from instituting mandatory measles vaccination for Venezuelans who emigrated to Brazil in 2018. FALSE
The information analyzed by Forget it’s false. The Federal Supreme Court (STF) did not prevent the Ministry of Health from instituting vaccination against measles for Venezuelan immigrants. THE STF press office reported by email that no record of the process or decision on the matter was found. THE PSOL press office, in turn, declared that the party never defended the agenda against mandatory vaccination against measles and did not take any action to prevent the application of the vaccine to Venezuelans entering Brazil. Finally, vaccination against measles was, and still is, mandatory for immigrants.
The disinformation piece cites as “source” a report from the Brazil Agency, published on August 14, 2018. However, the agency text is silent on the STF or PSOL. All the article says, in reality, is that the Health Ministry was studying publishing a technical note recommending that vaccination be mandatory for all Venezuelans entering the country.
The report also notes that, at that time, vaccination against measles was already mandatory for Venezuelans who intended to reside or request asylum in Brazil. The government intended to extend the requirement to everyone, including tourists or people traveling on business.
In 2018, there was a measles outbreak in Venezuela. Until June of that year, 1,427 cases had been registered. This outbreak had an impact in Brazil, with at least 84 cases registered in Roraima up to that point.
Mandatory vaccination has been provided by law in Brazil since 1904, when President Rodrigues Alves sanctioned the Lei No. 1,261/1904, which made immunization against smallpox mandatory. In 1975, the Law No. 6.259 / 1975 instituted the National Immunization Program, which provides a set of mandatory vaccines. The law was regulated by the Decree No. 78.231 / 1975.
