SÃO PAULO – The Minister of Health, Eduardo Pazuello, said that vaccination against Covid-19 in Brazil may begin in December or early next year, between January and February.

Pazuello conditioned the start of the vaccination campaign to the emergency approval of the Pfizer vaccine by the National Sanitary Surveillance Agency (Anvisa). The immunizer is developed by the North American pharmaceutical company and the German BioNTech laboratory.

“If Pfizer obtains the emergency authorization and Pfizer advances a delivery to us, [início da vacinação] it can happen at the end of December or in January. In small quantities, for emergency use, “said the minister in an interview with the channel. CNN Brazil.

Pazuello detailed the deliveries already planned for early 2021. “What do you have planned? 15 million doses of AstraZeneca and 500,000 starting doses of Pfizer, by January. Regarding Butantan [em referência à vacina CoronaVac, produzida pela chinesa Sinovac, em parceira com o instituto]I still don’t have the availability number for January. If we observe this, it is very likely that, between January and February, we will be vaccinating the Brazilian population, “he added.

“Pfizer, Butantan or AstraZeneca”

Although Pazuello cited the Pfizer vaccine as one of the government’s bets to initiate vaccination, the minister did not rule out other immunizers, and said that the federal government will buy “any vaccine that is registered in Anvisa, demonstrating its effectiveness and safety.”

“[A entrega] it can happen with Pfizer, Butantan or AstraZeneca ”, said Pazuello in the interview. “The quantities depend on the delivery.”

The announcement of the federal plan comes a day after a disagreement between Pazuello and João Doria, governor of São Paulo, on behalf of CoronaVac, bet of the São Paulo government against Covid-19. Earlier this week, Doria announced that vaccination in São Paulo will begin on January 25, although the vaccine has not yet been registered by Anvisa.

Today, Pazuello affirmed that there are no frictions between the Ministry of Health and the Butantan Institute, linked to the São Paulo government. The minister considered the conversation between him and Governor João Doria as “courteous and courteous.”

“We have a memorandum of understanding with Butantan. We will buy the vaccines produced that are registered. Butantan is the main supplier of vaccines for SUS. There is no type of friction with Butantan ”, said the minister.

Government vaccination plan

According to Pazuello, the plan to apply the vaccine against Covid-19 in Brazil was finalized on Wednesday (9), after almost three months of preparation. The plan is a 95-page document, which details the distribution of immunization and the entire logistics operation so that the doses reach health clinics in more than 5,000 Brazilian municipalities.

The minister said that vaccination against Covid-19 will be included in the National Immunization Program (PNI) and will use the same logistics that the Unified Health System (SUS) already operates. “The SUS works in a tripartite manner, with states and municipalities, and each one already has its role within this program,” said the minister.

Pazuello affirmed that the PNI is the “largest national immunization program in the world.” The minister explained that the Ministry of Health will distribute the doses mainly to the states by air and land. According to him, the federal government has already made progress in negotiations with the country’s airlines to ensure efficient distribution of doses. Pazuello must further detail the national vaccination plan this Wednesday.
