The oldest judge of the United States Supreme Court and leader of the liberal wing, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, died on Friday (18), at the age of 87. for complications of pancreatic cancerthe court said in a statement.
Ginsburg’s death gives President Donald Trump a chance to expand his conservative majority in court with a third nomination at a time of deep divisions in the country on the eve of the November 3 presidential election.
In the United States, justices of the Supreme Court are appointed for life.
Ginsburg was diagnosed with the disease last year, but it was not the first time she had undergone serious treatment. In 1999 she was treated for colon cancer and also faced pancreatic cancer in 2009. In December 2018 she was also treated for lung cancer.
His last hospitalization was on July 14, due to a treatment-related infection.

Ginsburg was appointed by former Democratic President Bill Clinton in 1993 and became the second woman to serve on the nation’s Supreme Court. Following the retirement of Judge Sandra Day O’Connor in 2006, Ginsburg remained the only woman on the court until the nomination of Sonia Sotomayor in 2009 and Elena Kagan in 2010.
On the Supreme Court, Ginsburg had a reputation for being a tough interrogator with a liberal bent. Marked by decisions that faced sexual discrimination, she was responsible for the admission of women, in 1996, to the Virginia Military Institute.
