US security forces stepped up their efforts to protect people in the nation’s capital, Washington, DC, on Joe Biden’s inauguration day, January 20, according to press reports published Tuesday.

The plan is to fire 1,500 soldiers from the National Guard.

16 groups were identified that intend to hold protests on the opening day.

Traditionally, the city is full during the event. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the governments of the District of Columbia, where the capital is located, and neighboring states Maryland and Virginia issued a statement asking people to stay home.

Despite these concerns, the committee responsible for Biden’s inauguration says it should make an open statement.

The president-elect intends to visit a national cemetery with three former presidents: Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton (who are also potential targets and thus make the security forces work harder).

The FBI has reached out to all 50 US states to watch out for protests from far-right groups.

The protesters’ plan is to march in state capitals this weekend, according to the FBI.

Federal buildings in state capitals will have greater security.

The FBI statement has information from the intelligence office itself as well as from other agencies. Some of the data has not been confirmed, but it is said that there will be protests in the capitals of all states, according to the “Washington Post.”

Security Secretary

Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Chad Wolf resigned on Monday.

Wolf criticized the people who broke into the US Congress building, saying the country had seen “some supporters of the president use violence as a means to achieve political ends.”

Pete Gaynor, administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, will replace him as acting secretary, the office said.

Supporters of Donald Trump stormed the Capitol last Wednesday in an attack that left five dead and dozens injured among protesters and security forces. Dozens of pro-Trump extremists were arrested.

Due to the president’s incitement to the invasion, Democrats decided on Monday to call for impeachment against Trump, even a few days before the end of the Republican term. The vote in the House is expected to take place this week.
