US Leading Infectious Disease Specialist Anthony Fauci Says Vaccine Verdict Should Come December

LONDON – One of America’s leading infectious disease experts, Anthony Fauci, said Sunday that it will be clear whether a Covid-19 vaccine is safe and effective by early December, but that a comprehensive vaccination is not likely until 2021..

“We will know if a vaccine is safe and effective in late November, early December,” Fauci told the BBC. – When it comes to vaccinating a substantial part of the population, so that it has a significant impact on the dynamics of the epidemic, it is most likely that this will not happen until the second or third quarter of the year.

Fauci had already criticized Russia about two months ago for the hasty launch of its coronavirus vaccine. The immunizer, called Sputnik V, has been approved without evidence that phase 3 (the last) clinical trials have been completed, an essential part of the development steps that can show that a product is safe and effective in people.

– Having a vaccine and showing that a vaccine is safe and effective are two different things – he said, at the time, participating in a round table on the subject.

Anvisa launches Coronavac import

In Brazil, the National Sanitary Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) unanimously announced on Friday the importation of six million doses of the CoronaVac vaccine, requested by the Butantan Institute, which has an alliance with the Chinese laboratory Sinovac for the production of the immunizer against COVID-19.

The authorization, however, has nothing to do with the request for authorization to import supplies for the production of the vaccine in Brazil, also requested by Butantan and subject to criticism yesterday from the institute’s board.

The agreement signed with Sinovac foresees the importation of six million doses of the CoronaVac vaccine produced in China – which was authorized this afternoon by Anvisa – and the production of another 40 million doses until December, at the Butantan factory in Brazil, with inputs imported from the Chinese laboratory. This stagnation in the import of inputs for the production of these 40 million doses remains undefined.

Obligation in justice

The president of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Minister Luiz Fux, said this Friday that the Justice needs to analyze issues related to the Covid-19 vaccine. According to him, the best thing is that this decision is made by the STF itself. There is currently a debate on whether the vaccine is mandatory or not, which could begin to be applied next year, if approved by the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa), but Fux did not advance his point of view.

President Jair Bolsonaro has already said that he is against the obligation. But a law that he signed at the beginning of the pandemic authorizes mandatory vaccination, in addition to other preventive measures to attend a public health emergency of international importance, such as Covid-19.

– You can write, there will be a judicialization, which I think is necessary, on this issue of vaccination. Not just individual freedom, but also, let’s say, the prerequisites for adopting a vaccine. I am not advancing any point of view. I’m just saying that this judicialization will be important, and preferably directly in the Supreme Court. Why? Because one of the great instruments in legal certainty is the jurisprudence established in the Federal Supreme Court – said Fux in a videoconference organized by the Alliance for Business Advocacy (Alae).
