After closing 2020 with three titles, Palmeiras opens his search for new achievements next week, when he faces Defensa y Justicia, from Argentina, winning the Recopa Sul-Americana Cup. The first leg is on the 7th, in Buenos Aires.

Current champion of the Libertadores, Verdão seeks against the Argentines, current champions of the South American Cup, his first title in the competition.

The Recopa Sul-Americana was played from 1989 to 1998, when the winner of the Libertadores faced the winner of the Supercopa (a tournament that involved all the Libertadores champions) or the Conmebol Cup if the same team won both tournaments.

In 1999, when the Palmeirenses won the Libertadores for the first time, Conmebol did not organize the dispute, which was resumed in 2002 after the creation of the Copa Sudamericana.

After collecting more than R $ 200 million in prizes for his sports performance in 2020, Palmeiras can reinforce his cash with Recopa.

The tournament champion will receive US $ 1.25 million (about R $ 7 million), while the runner-up will receive US $ 750 thousand (R $ 4.2 million).

Contrary to what happened in the conquests of Paulistão, Copa do Brasil and Libertadores, the sponsorship contract with Crefisa does not foresee a new bonus for the Recopa Sul-Americana.

The return match between Palmeiras and Defensa y Justicia is scheduled for the 14th. With the uncertainty about the matches in São Paulo due to the pandemic, Verdão pointed out the Mané Garrincha stadium in Brasilia to Conmebol as the scene of the decision.
