UEFA revealed on Wednesday who are the three finalists for the award for the best player in Europe in the 2019/2020 season. Belgian midfielder Kevin de Bruyne from Manchester City, German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and Polish striker Robert Lewandowski, both from Bayern Munich, are candidates for the award to be presented on October 1, in a virtual event that will precede the draw from the group stage of the Champions League.

The Top 10 of the best in Europe last season is dominated by Bayern Munich, champions by defeating Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 at the Estádio da Luz, in Lisbon, capital of Portugal. In addition to the two finalists, forward Thomas Muller came in sixth, Brazilian midfielder Thiago Alcântara (already negotiated with Liverpool) was eighth, one position ahead of midfielder / right-back Joshua Kimmich.

The vice-champion of the Champions League, the Brazilian Neymar, of Paris Saint-Germain, was one step away from being a finalist, but finished in fourth place alongside Argentine star Lionel Messi, of Barcelona. Both had 53 points according to the voting system established by UEFA. The Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo, of Juventus, was in tenth place with 25.

Since the award’s inception in 2011, this is the first time Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo have not appeared among the three finalists. Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk, who stood out in Liverpool’s title campaign in the 2018/2019 Champions League, was the winner last year.

The list was drawn up by a jury made up of 80 coaches from the clubs that participated in the group stage of the Champions League and Europa League, as well as 55 journalists, one from each of the UEFA associations. The members chose their first three players, the first received five points, the second three, and the third one point. Coaches could not vote for players on their own team. The judgment criterion was performance throughout the season in all competitions, both nationally and internationally, in clubs and teams.

OTHER AWARDS – Among the coaches, the award will be from a German. The trio consists of Hansi Flick of Bayern Munich, Jürgen Klopp of Liverpool and Julian Nagelsmann of RB Leipzig, who lost in the semifinals with Paris Saint-Germain.

The Top 10 of coaches was completed by Thomas Tuchel (Paris Saint-Germain), Gian Piero Gasperini (Atalanta), Julen Lopetegui (Sevilla), Rudi García (Lyon), Zinedine Zidane (Real Madrid), Pep Guardiola (Manchester City) and Antonio Conte (Inter Milan).

Among women, the dispute will be between the English Lucy Bronze, the French Wendie Renard and the Danish Pernille Harder. The first two were part of the Lyon squad, which won the third European championship in 2019/2020, while Harder played in Wolfsburg, a finalist in the women’s Champions League.
