Two million doses of CoronaVac, a vaccine against the new coronavirus developed and tested by the Butantan Institute in partnership with the Chinese laboratory Sinovac, arrived this morning at Guarulhos International Airport, in São Paulo.
The plane landed at the terminal around 6:30 am, according to images from TV Globo.
The shipment, the third one that arrives from China with doses or supplies made for the local production of CoronaVac from Butantan. In total, the state currently has 3.12 million doses of the vaccine available.
The São Paulo government has already said that it will enter next week with a request for simultaneous release from Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency) and the Chinese health agency. With this, the management of Governor João Doria (PSDB) intends to have an authorization to start vaccination at the beginning of the year.
“It is the largest vaccine load ever to reach the American continent at one time,” Doria said at a press conference yesterday. “And for the next few weeks we will continue to receive supplies from Butantan to produce more vaccines. I renew the information that we are ready to start vaccination as long as we receive approval from Anvisa or the Chinese drug regulatory agency,” added the toucan.
Doria has already announced a state vaccination plan as of January 25, the anniversary date of the state capital. The governor has frequently demanded from the Bolsonaro administration that CoronaVac be bought and distributed by the Ministry of Health itself.
Yesterday, the Minister of Health, Eduardo Pazuello, again cited a combination of factors to say today that Brazil could have, in January, 24.7 million doses of vaccines available against covid-19 in January.
“We are talking, in January, of 500 thousand doses of Pfizer, 9 million doses of Butantan and 15 million of AstraZeneca. The exact date is the month of January. It could be January 18, 20. But if we can understand that the process will give us the date (…) it already gives us a new design. All this depends on the Anvisa registry, ”he said.
