What was already difficult for the drivers got worse: if Friday was dry, it was already difficult to control the cars due to the poor grip of the newly repaved asphalt in Istanbul, the rain that fell on Saturday during the third free practice. The Turkish Grand Prix has made life hell for the drivers. Amid countless escapes and rounds, RBR’s Max Verstappen did 1m48s485 and was the fastest, 0s945 ahead of Ferrari’s second-placed Charles Leclerc.

Frantic training start

With the track still wet at the start of practice, the riders set their best times in the first minutes of activity, still on intermediate tires. The dispute for the best time was between Verstappen and Leclerc, with an advantage for the Dutchman.

Even without ideal grip because it was recently repaved, the asphalt of Istanbul turned out to be even more difficult for cyclists to handle in the rain. Almost all the cyclists who entered the track spun at some point. Only Daniil Kvyat rode four times.

In the most dangerous escape from practice, Leclerc came out of Turn 2 and narrowly missed the wall, which could jeopardize his participation in qualifying on Saturday depending on the force of an eventual crash.

In similar rounds, in exactly the same corner, Sainz and Giovinazzi smashed and even slid across the grass, but they did not hit. In fact, oddly enough, no drivers were injured despite the rounds and leaks festival.

At one point in the session, Esteban Ocon appeared upside down, but the escape was not on his own, but because Charles Leclerc lost his braking point and hit Renault. Fortunately, there was no damage to the Frenchman’s car, which he continued in training.

After half an hour of training, the precipitation increased considerably, and the pilots put on extreme rain tires instead of the middlemen. But the conditions were so bad that everyone stayed in the pits. Only in the final minutes did Gasly, Kvyat, Raikkonen and Giovinazzi return to the track.
