US President Donald Trump said on his Twitter profile Saturday that he considered “an obligation, without delay,” to elect a new judge to the US Supreme Court. The announcement comes after the death of the oldest judge and leader of the liberal wing, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, on Friday (18), at the age of 87, due to complications from pancreatic cancer.
“We were placed in this position of power and importance to make decisions by the people who elected us with such pride, the most important thing for a long time is considered the election of the justices of the Supreme Court of the United States. We have this obligation, without delay!”

Ginsburg’s death gives Trump a chance to expand his conservative majority on the Court, with a third nomination at a time of deep divisions in the country on the eve of the November 3 presidential election.

Senate leaders diverge
The leader of the Democratic senators, Chuck Schumer, has already spoken, saying that the Ginsburg seat should not be filled before the November elections. Currently, without the judge, the Court is maintained with five conservative and three liberal judges.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said the House would support Trump’s nomination for the Ginsburg seat. Upon being informed of the judge’s death, Trump told reporters that he regretted her death and that “agree or not” she was a “wonderful woman who lived a wonderful life.”

Ginsburg was appointed by former Democratic President Bill Clinton in 1993 and became the second woman to join the Supreme Court. Following the retirement of Judge Sandra Day O’Connor in 2006, Ginsburg remained the only woman on the Court until the appointment of Sonia Sotomayor in 2009 and Elena Kagan in 2010.
On the Supreme Court, Ginsburg had a reputation for being a tough interrogator with a liberal bent. Marked by decisions that faced sexual discrimination, she was responsible for the admission of women, in 1996, to the Virginia Military Institute.
During the administration of President Barack Obama, some liberals insisted that Ginsburg resign. This was so the Democrat could nominate his successor, but she declined the request.
