The heat, drought, and winds help increase the speed of the flames that destroy much of the Pantanal. The journalist Eunice Ramos walked the path through the region and shows the impact of fire on vegetation and animals.
In the video you can have a dimension of the area affected by the fires along the Transpantaneira, the road that crosses the Pantanal of Mato Grosso. It hasn’t rained there for more than three months. The vegetation is so dry that the noise of the flames can be heard in the distance.
Under these conditions, the fire spreads easily, swallowing everything that lies ahead. Animals run desperate. Many species are in the breeding season and leave their nests when the flames approach.
“The impact is immense. This period of reproduction will suffer in chain. We saw several animals that were burned and we believe that there are more that are suffering from the fire, both asphyxiated and due to lack of food, and this affects the entire food chain ”, says Luís Antônio Solino, biologist.
Besides the damage to nature, the fire in the Pantanal also brings economic losses. Driven by the wind, the fire quickly left and destroyed the bridge. A nuisance for the residents of the region.
Farmer Luís Falcão de Arruda did not have time to take his cattle to safety. At least 20 animals were burned to death. “They were coming and the fire was burning. Pedestrians were also nearly killed by the fire. There is no way to save, so you have to let it go. Because then the fire goes over the cattle, goes over us, we have to let go, “he says.
In Mato Grosso alone, 940 thousand hectares of vegetation have already been destroyed in the Pantanal. The inhabitants of the riverside are frightened by the speed of the fire and fear that it will hit the houses. Doña María is always alert to avoid a tragedy.
“All life was burned, but not as it is this year, because everything on the side is fire and we are terrified to see it. I am afraid that it will arrive and arrive at my hut, ”says Maria do Carmo Viegas, on the riverbank.
In addition to the Pantanal, the fires now also affect Chapada dos Guimarães. The fire started on Friday (28), spread through the hills, approaching an inn. The strong wind and dry weather make it difficult for members of the ICMbio brigade and firefighters. The size of the area destroyed by the fire has not yet been released, but the reflection of the fires can already be seen from afar.
