Tremor is felt in cities of Recôncavo Baiano and in the south of the state – 08/30/2020

The earthquakes were felt this Sunday morning in the cities of Recôncavo Baiano and in the south of the state.

The tremors were recorded by the USP Seismology Center (University of São Paulo) and reached magnitudes of 4.2 and 3.7 on the Richter scale, in the city of Amargosa, about 160 kilometers from Salvador. There is no record of injuries.

The first strongest tremor was recorded around 7:45 am. The second, a little softer, around 8:20 am.

According to the records of the PM (Military Police), the 190 service received calls from residents of the region with reports of the earthquake.

“Various reports from popular people in Santo Antônio de Jesús, in addition to the cities of Castro Alves, Varzedo and Amargosa, report that they felt an earthquake, which lasted about 10 seconds, causing panic in some neighbors,” says a PM report.

The agency says it has no records, so far, of reports of damage or casualties due to the quake.

Today’s tremors were felt in at least 19 cities in Bahia:

Other tremors

In recent days, several earthquakes have been registered in municipalities of the Northeast Region, according to the Labsis (Seismology Laboratory) of the UFRN (Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte).

Yesterday (29), around 5:23 am, an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 2.2 on the Richter scale was recorded in the Pedra Preta region, in Rio Grande do Norte. Last week, on the 17th, another earthquake, of preliminary magnitude 1.8, was also registered in the region.
