“Today I regret a little not having left before,” says Denis about his career in São Paulo | Saint Paul

Currently in Gil Vicente, from Portugal, he declared that he had possibilities to play in Europe and believes that he would be remembered in a different way if he had left Tricolor before December 2017, when his career at Morumbi ended.

Denis was a partner of Rogério Ceni from 2009 to 2015, when the idol retired. He became the former successor of the former goalkeeper in 2016. After playing for São Paulo, Denis moved to Figueirense.

– During these nine years in São Paulo, some proposals appeared. They appeared again from Europe, from the same team, in 2012 or 2013, if I’m not mistaken. I had a survey. At that time, Juvental (Juvêncio), president of São Paulo, did not say that I would leave, because Rogério was close to stopping and they were working to get me inside. Some players, Rogério himself saying that he was there so long, to stay and not leave. He had other opportunities and I preferred, speaking with everyone, businessman, family and President Juvenal, to continue in São Paulo – Denis said, in an interview with “ESPN Brasil”.

– Now speaking today is easy, but at that time it was a choice I had. I was in a great club, with the prospect of playing and starting. It was difficult to decide an exit. If it were today, it is difficult to speak because of everything that happened, I even regret a little not having left before, because I think that if I left before São Paulo, my story would be totally different. People would remember only the good things that happened. Today I regret a little not having left before, but I say again that everything I went through in São Paulo was a learning experience and I have great affection for the club, the goalkeeper added.

– I am very grateful for São Paulo. They were nine seasons within one of the largest clubs in Brazil. I am very happy to be part of the history of São Paulo. São Paulo is part of my life. There is no way not to talk about player Denis and not to mention São Paulo. I waited seven years in the Rogério reserve to have a chance. Of course mistakes have happened, it happens and every player makes mistakes. At the moment, I think they have little potential. Of course, I had some errors. I assume that. All the players, mainly the goalkeeper, but I think it was a bit of a stretch at the time. And little is said about the arrangements that happened. Altogether, Denis played 173 games for São Paulo. In 2017, he received a tribute from the board of directors in Morumbi’s locker room before leaving.
