HE Microsoft will no longer buy TikTok. After more than a month of trading, the owner of the video app, ByteDance, rejected the tech giant’s offer to acquire operations in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
To prevent the application from being banned in the United States, the US operation of TikTok must be acquired by a North American company until this Tuesday (15). In addition to Microsoft, Oracle is in negotiations with ByteDance. US President Donald Trump said the deadline for completing the negotiations will not be extended.
According to “The Wall Street Journal”, it is possible that Oracle was chosen to run TikTok in the United States and an announcement could come soon.
In its official blog this Sunday (13), Microsoft confirmed the rejection of the offer by ByteDance. “We are confident that our proposal would have been good for TikTok users, while the goal was to protect national security interests,” the company said. He was not informed of the trading values or the changes Microsoft said it would make on TikTok.
Microsoft also said that if the deal were to close, it would have made significant changes to ensure the service meets the highest standards for security, privacy and fighting disinformation. “We look forward to seeing how the service evolves in these important areas,” he concluded.
Microsoft revealed in August that it was seeking a deal to buy TikTok’s operations in the United States, Australia, Canada and New Zealand. The US government was participating in the negotiations, accusing the platform of being a Chinese intelligence tool.
TikTok: the Chinese application that has gained millions of users
On Friday, the Chinese government said it would rather have TikTok shut down its US operations than have a forced sale of operations. Chinese officials estimated that a forced sale would make ByteDance and China appear weak under pressure from Washington, the sources said.
ByteDance told Reuters that the Chinese government never suggested shutting down TikTok in the United States or any other market.
In late August, TikTok filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration. The company said it tried to establish a relationship with the United States for nearly a year, but the US government did not pay attention to the facts. In early August, the US president gave 45 days for the application’s operations in the country to be sold or it could be banned.
TikTok is known for its short videos popular with teens. But US officials have raised concerns that information about the platform’s users may be passed on to China.
The app said it would not comply with any requests to share user data with the Chinese authorities.
