The 2 million doses of the Oxford / AstraZeneca vaccine, developed in collaboration with the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), will start moving to the states on Saturday afternoon (23). After arriving on an Emirates flight to Guarulhos airport, at 5:20 pm on Friday (22), the cargo was transported on a Azul plane to the Galeão Air Base, where it arrived at 10 pm.

The plane was received on the runway with a symbolic baptism, with jets of water launched in an arc by the firefighters of the Rio-Galeão airport.

The ready vaccines were manufactured by the Serum Institute, in India, and had been expected from Saturday (16), but were delayed in shipment due to internal problems in India.

The Minister of Health, Eduardo Pazuello, received the draw on Brazilian soil, together with the Ministers of Foreign Relations, Ernesto Araújo, and of Communications, Fábio Faria. Also present were the ambassador of India, Suresh Reddy, and the president of Fiocruz, Nisia Trindade. The latter joined the group in Rio de Janeiro.

“The technological order foresees 100 million doses for the first semester. Those 2 million doses are just the beginning. It is the beginning of the process. The objective of the Ministry of Health is the massive vaccination of the Brazilian people. And that will quickly put us at the top of the list of vaccine numbers. With 8 million doses, we will become the second country in the West with the most vaccines, “Pazuello said, in a statement to the press at the Air Base.

Minister Ernesto Araújo highlighted cooperation and diplomatic relations with India. “This is the beginning of a partnership both in the pharmaceutical area and in many other areas with India. Country for which we have immense admiration, an immense friendship, which is now consolidated even more ”, said Araújo.

The Indian ambassador called the moment a historic day between the two countries. “This day brings smiles and optimism to many people. Brazil is the first country to receive this cargo and we are very proud to be part of this process. India will guarantee vaccines for all countries and all people, ”said Suresh Reddy.

For the president of Fiocruz, the arrival of the vaccine is a victory for science. “In this moment of loss, having the vaccine is a hope that comes from science, which comes from the Unified Health System. It is a 70% effective vaccine that can be administered in 12 weeks. This will be very important for our health system ”, said Nísia Trindade.

From the Air Base, the vaccines were transported in refrigerated trucks to the Immunobiological Institute of Technology (Bio-Manguinhos / Fiocruz), to verify quality and safety, in addition to labeling, with labeling of the boxes with information in Portuguese.

This process will be carried out during the morning and Saturday morning and will be carried out by teams trained in good production practices. The forecast is that the vaccines will be ready to be distributed to all Brazilian states in the afternoon.

All distribution logistics will be in charge of the Ministry of Health, through the National Plan of Operationalization of Vaccines against Covid-19.

Bolsonaro

On Twitter, President Jair Bolsonaro commented on the arrival of 2 million doses of the AstraZeneca / Oxford vaccine. He said they were “negotiated by the Ministry of Health and [a vacina já foi] also acquired by a large number of countries ”.
