Social distancing is the only effective measure we currently have to prevent the transmission of covid-19 and there is no plan B, said the infectologist and coordinator of the São Paulo Coronavirus Contingency Center, David Uip.

In an interview with the newspaper “Valor Econômico”, the doctor, who was infected with the coronavirus and had to isolate himself for 14 days, reiterated the state government’s speech that the rate of social isolation should be at least higher than 50% for that activity may begin to resume.

Some days last week, the social isolation rate in São Paulo was below this level, but it increased over the weekend and reached 58% on Sunday (26).

“This regression [do isolamento] It can’t happen, and I know how difficult it is to be quarantined. Only there is no plan B at the moment. There is no vaccine or medicine. What we can do is social distance, “said Uip.

According to him, the relaxation of the isolation measures will depend not only on the percentage of people who remain at home, but on other factors such as: evidence offer, availability of beds and decrease in the number of new cases.

“The governor [João Doria] You have repeatedly announced that this slowdown depends on what will happen, which is correct. There may be flexibility and maintenance, it depends on the data to be presented, “said the infectologist.

Back to normal

Uip also said that it is not possible when people’s lives will return to normal. According to him, this period has been four to five months in other countries, but the discovery of a drug or vaccine that is effective against the disease could accelerate this resumption.

A drug can appear at any time, since there are several investigations in the world in this direction. The vaccine, on the other hand, takes longer because it requires a period of scientific research and then clinical research.
