A World Health Organization (WHO) validated this Thursday 31 the emergency use of the vaccine against COVID-19 developed by Pfizer in alliance with BioNTech. The immunizer is the first to receive validation in the pandemic and, in a statement, the WHO emphasized the need for equal access to the vaccine globally. The measure opens space for countries to issue their own regulatory approvals, and for organizations linked to the WHO, such as the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), to seek the vaccine for local distribution.
“WHO and our partners are working around the clock to evaluate other vaccines that have achieved safety and efficacy standards. We encourage more developers to come in for review and evaluation. It is of vital importance to ensure the critical supply necessary to serve all the countries of the world and contain the pandemic, ”said Mariangela Simão, WHO’s deputy director of Access to Medicines and Medical Products.
The review concluded that the vaccine met mandatory criteria for safety and efficacy established by the WHO, and that the benefits of using the immunizer outweigh the potential risks. On January 5, 2021, a meeting will be held to formulate policies and specific recommendations for the use of the product in populations, based on the prioritization recommendations.
The Pfizer immunizer has already received authorization for emergency use in countries such as the United Kingdom and the United States, as well as the European Union.
