In a joint virtual event to celebrate Labor Day, the main trade union centers showed on Friday (1) messages on social networks recorded by former presidents of the Republic and politicians from various parties.

Traditionally, the date is marked by events and shows that generally gather large audiences in person. This year, however, this was not possible due to the need to avoid crowds and maintain social distance, as a way to contain the spread of the new coronavirus.

The broadcast on social media lasted more than six hours and messages interspersed with politicians with artist presentations and speeches by union members.

The event was attended by several musicians, such as Leci Brandão, Odair José, Zélia Duncan and Roger Waters, former Pink Floyd.

Named “1st of May in solidarity: a new world is possible”, the event was jointly organized by the Central Única dos Trabalhadores (CUT), Central dos Sindicatos Brasileiros (CSB), Central Geral dos Trabalhadores do Brasil (CGTB), Central dos Workers of Brazil (CTB), Força Sindical, Intersindical, New Central Union of Workers (NCST), Public Central of the Server and General Union of Workers (UGT).

The tone of the political speeches was one of unity to face the pandemic and criticism of the government of President Jair Bolsonaro.

In his message, former President Fernando Henrique Cardoso declared that “it is not time for us to fall apart.”

“It is time to unite because we have to build a future. And the future has to be built on the conditions of the present. They are negative, I know, but they are the ones we have, ”he said.

For former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, “the coronavirus tragedy exposed an unquestionable truth in the light of the sun: what sustains capitalism is not capital. We are the workers ”.

“Great tragedies also reveal the true character of people and things. I am not referring only to the debauchery of the President of the Republic with the memory of more than 5,000 Brazilians killed by the greedy. The pandemic left capitalism naked, ”he declared.

Former President Dilma Rousseff also sent a video in which she stated that “if the President [Bolsonaro] He despises life and shrugs, saying “So what?”, our determined search for change will show him that the Brazilian people will impose their will and return to the path of social justice and the development of the country. ”

“Irresponsibly, Jair Bolsonaro despises the disease, mocks the dead and degrades the President of the President of the Republic. In the Planalto Palace, today there is a political leader who is not ashamed to promote disorder and destruction of the democratic order, supporting protests against the institutions of the Republic, “said Dilma.

The national president of the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB), Felipe Santa Cruz, said that, in recent years, “there has been an attack against labor justice”, with “absolutely unfortunate labor reform” and that now “the world The whole will pass for a discussion of a more fraternal society. ”

In a video recorded for the event, the governor of Maranhão, Flávio Dino (PCdoB), indicated three axes of a priority agenda.

“One of them is the issue of the fight against the coronavirus. The second axis implies the need to preserve and expand public services, such as SUS [Sistema Único de Saúde]. The third is the defense of the Brazilian economy ”.

The presidents of some political parties, such as Gleisi Hoffmann (PT), Carlos Lupi (PDT), Paulo Pereira da Silva (Solidaridad), Luciana Santos (PCdoB) and José Luiz Penna (PV), also sent messages.

Former presidential candidates, former Ceará Governor Ciro Gomes (PDT), former Minister Fernando Haddad (PT) and former Minister Marina Silva (Rede) also gave their testimony.

“I hope that this May Day, despite all the affliction and anguish, help to raise our beloved Brazilian people and we can organize this fight and recover our rights,” said Ciro Gomes.

In Haddad’s assessment, worker achievements have been attacked in recent years. “Our task is to resist once again and avoid setbacks,” he said.

For Marina Silva, this is May 1 “the most difficult of the century”.

“It is essential that we are united around what is essential: the defense of life, the protection of rights and the defense of democracy. (…) That any government with authoritarian delusions should not be allowed to resume the dictatorship process, “he said.

Messages were also shown from former deputy Manuela D’Ávila (PCdoB), senator Randolfe Rodrigues (Rede-AP) and the leader of the PSB in the House, deputy Alessandro Molon (RJ).

On May 1, the president Jair Bolsonaro received in the morning at the official residence of the Palácio da Alvorada the visit of the farmers who appreciated the edition of provisional measure 957.

The MP allocated R $ 500 million to the Food Acquisition Program (PAA), with the objective of promoting access to food and promoting family farming.

Bolsonaro spoke about May 1 at the request of Congresswoman Bia Kicis (PSL-DF), who made a live video during the farmers’ visit. She asked the president to send a message about the date.

“I would like everyone to go back to work, but it is not me who decides this. They are the governors and mayors, right? So, good morning everyone. Brazil is a wonderful country. We will return to normal, “said the president.

The Communications Secretary of the Planalto Palace reported that there was no provision for an official statement from the president regarding Labor Day.
