Images from the Carrefour internal security circuit in Porto Alegre show the last moments of 40-year-old João Alberto Silveira Freitas, before being assassinated when he was attacked by a security guard at the establishment and by a temporary military policeman on Thursday night (19). They are both in custody.
In the recording obtained by Twitter, It is possible to see Beto, as he is known, with his wife at the cash register, who is shopping. He walks away from her and stands near the wall across the hall. There is a security guard near him.
In the images you can see that Beto makes a gesture with his thumb – as if he were a good guy – towards the cashier. In an interview with Twitter Yesterday, his wife, Milena Borges Alves, 43, said that he had played with a security guard, who took offense and called his companions, who began to follow him. In the pictures, it is not possible to tell who he is giving the thumb signal to.
Seconds after the gesture, an employee from the market approaches, talks to Beto and addresses the security guard who is near him. Then he goes back to him and another man approaches; it is not possible to say who is the security guard and who is the prime minister. The four of them leave the scene.
The extract sent by the police to the Twitter does not show Beto’s punch to one of the men, who was reported by the Carrefour employee to the police. However, the police chief Roberta Bertoldo, who is responsible for the investigation, has already analyzed the complete images and assures that there is the aggression of the client against one of the men.
“He does throw the punch. And it was because of that punch that the security guards hit him. You see who he hits. It seems to me that it was the PM (who was hit),” said the delegate. The passage was not released to the press.
Case sparked protests in Brazil
The episode, which took place the day before the feast of the Black Consciousness, sparked riots. Some 2,500,000 people gathered in a protest late yesterday afternoon in the north of Porto Alegre. The protesters gathered in front of the main entrance to Carrefour, on Avenida Plínio Brasil Milano. The establishment did not open its doors.
After a peaceful start, a group of about 50 people tried to break into the closed supermarket. The Military Brigade occupied the interior of the establishment and began to throw bombs to keep protesters away from the door, which was damaged. One person managed to invade the yard and set some materials on fire. After the confusion, many people left the protest.
In São Paulo, protesters stormed the Carrefour store, located inside a shopping center in the Paulista Avenue region. Under orders not to loot, the protesters broke through the iron fence and the glass facade of the supermarket, threw stones and looted. Paint cans were thrown at the store, but there was no recall. No one is hurt. A fire outbreak was quickly controlled. On Twitter, some protesters reported seeing people from the region throw eggs and glass bottles at protesters.
In the capital of Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, there were protests in two supermarket chains, one inside a shopping center and the other in a central unit. Among the protesters was singer Djonga, who posted stories of the event on his Instagram.
In Rio de Janeiro, the protest took place in a unit in Barra da Tijuca, where protesters shouted “murderers” and “the lives of blacks matter.” Curitiba also registered acts late in the afternoon yesterday.
Understand the case
João Alberto Silveira Freitas allegedly argued with the cashier of the establishment and was led by security guards from the store to the parking lot on the lower floor. One of them, an interim military policeman – an employee hired by the Military Brigade for a fixed period of time, for administrative activities – accompanied the displacement and collaborated in the beating of Freitas.
Along the way, accompanied by a Carrefour employee, Freitas allegedly fired a punch at the PM, according to the worker, in testimony to the police.
“After that, the tumult started and the two attacked him in an attempt to contain it. They (the security guards) even got on his body, put a leg on his neck or chest,” said the chief delegate. Leandro Bodoia.
The attackers were arrested, suspected of intentional homicide. The scene has been compared on social networks with that of George Floyd, who died of suffocation by police in the United States.
