The Trump administration acknowledged Sunday that a group of hackers, allegedly supported by the Russian government, according to federal and private experts, have hacked into the networks of the Treasury Department and the Commerce Department’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration.
The government fears that the attack has affected other government sectors.
According to information from the New York Times, a series of investigations are underway to determine whether other parts of the government have been targeted.
At a press conference, John Ullyot, spokesman for the National Security Council, said he was taking steps to identify and remedy potential problems related to this situation.
According to Reuters, a government official said it was not yet possible to say how damaging the recent attacks were and how much material was lost. The National Security Council reportedly met at the White House on Saturday (12) to discuss the matter.
According to Reuters, emails from Commerce Department staff have been monitored by hackers for months.
