Lewis Hamilton did not have the best start to the race, the Briton lost the lead to Valtteri Bottas after the start, but regained his position on the first restart after the red flag on the ninth lap.
The race was marked by a second red flag after a hit Walk Lance. And for the remaining 13 laps, Hamilton secured victory.
The event-filled race only saw 12 cars finish, prompting Hamilton to call him “one of the craziest” to F1.
“I felt like I did three races in one day, I’m very exhausted, to be honest,” said Hamilton. “
“I didn’t have a good first start. Then we had a start, which wasn’t the best either. The second start, coming out of second place was better.”
“So I had a comfortable advantage of about seven seconds, on new tires, and then another. [bandeira vermelha]. “
“Of course anything can happen on those outings, but luckily I got the best of the day.”
“Valtteri was still on the circuit the whole time, if I made a mistake, he would have passed me on this 1,000 meter straight.”
“Today has been physically and mentally one of the most challenging days I have ever experienced.”
Hamilton said the stoppages made it difficult to focus during the race, but praised the Mercedes team for staying calm under the circumstances.
“Valtteri was very fast all weekend, so having to hold him back, with the starts and stops that we had … I wouldn’t say it was very easy,” said Hamilton.
“But [estou] very, very grateful to the team for running up and down the pit lane. We had a long way to go and with their composure I think they did an amazing job.
“I’m proud to be a part of this and very proud of today’s performance. It wasn’t easy keeping these guys behind.”
Mugello is another new circuit where Hamilton won a race, as the track hosted its first F1 Grand Prix this weekend.
This means that Hamilton extended his record for number of circuits in which he achieved at least one victory, the count is now 27.
When asked if he would like to return to Mugello, Hamilton replied: “I would. I don’t know what it was like for the rest of the peloton, but yeah, it’s an amazing track and I’d love to go back.”
