The flood that swept away President Getúlio at dawn on Thursday (17) it had a destructive potential comparable to that of the landslides in Morro do Baú, in Ilhota, in the climate tragedy of 2008. The comparison is by the head of the Civil Defense of Santa Catarina, Colonel of the Aldo Baptista Neto Fire Department, who is from Rio do Sul and worked in the Itajaí Valley 12 years ago.

There was 125 millimeters of rain between 10 p.m. Wednesday and 3 a.m. Thursday. Streets turned into rivers. They took houses and vehicles. The ravines slid into residential areas. Six deaths were confirmed at 10:20 a.m. The Civil Defense even released the death toll of 10, but later corrected the information. The number of missing persons has not been estimated.

In the late afternoon of Wednesday, the State Civil Defense issued warnings about the possibility of electrical storms between Alto Vale and Litoral. But no model has predicted something so intense.
– The disaster is a combination of rain plus the vulnerability of the terrain. The alerts already started at 5 pm yesterday (Wednesday) for the region, but the resulting impact is unfortunately unpredictable.

The concern now is about the possibility of rain for the next few hours in the Upper Valley and the rise in the level of the rivers. According to the meteorological warning released this morning, there is the possibility of heavy rains in the Itajaí Valley, but also in the Litoral and Grande Florianópolis.

In November 2008, torrential rains hit the entire state of Santa Catarina, especially the Itajaí Valley. At Morro do Baúin Ilhota, floods and large landslides killed 47 people. The severity of the phenomenon has made the small municipality the epicenter of the disaster.
