Heavy rains hit the city of Duque de Caxias, in the Rio de Janeiro metropolitan region, on Tuesday afternoon (22). A woman died, three houses fell, vehicles were swept away and five families were displaced, according to the city council.
Videos on social media show streets turning into rivers with a flood of muddy water. One of them caught a woman being kidnapped and another, the walls of one of the houses falling.
The victim was identified as Fatima Marina Fernandes de Carvalho, 61 years old. The municipal civil defense dismissed the suspicion that a second woman had died.
The most affected place was the Xerém district, an area historically with storm problems, especially the Carreteiro, Santo Antônio, Vila Canaã, Barreiros and Vila Urussaí neighborhoods, where the Saracuruna river overflowed. Sirens were even activated in these places.
Initially, the number of 150 displaced families who had left their homes for safety had been released until they felt safe to return. Most of them returned overnight or in the morning, with the cleaning of the residences and the removal of debris.
The five families who were left without a place to live in Carreteiro were registered by the Municipal Secretariat for Social Assistance and Human Rights and are staying in the family home, according to the city council.
On the afternoon of this Wednesday (23), teams from the Civil Defense and the Municipal Works and Social Assistance Secretariats toured the city attending to the residents and monitoring the events. Support points were also established for registration and assistance to the homeless population.
“First we will evaluate the condemned houses with the Civil Defense. Through Renta Social and the Minha Casa, Minha Vida program we will relocate these families, but the most important thing is to bring them back to life. Today we have a device, we are going to work in the early hours Again and we will spend Christmas with everything in order, ”Mayor Washington Reis told TV Globo’s“ Bom Dia Rio ”.
According to him, the destruction was concentrated in an area of about 10 km². Asked about preventing rain, he replied: “We have a great infrastructure that we built from galleries, it was a rain of great proportions that could have the largest infrastructure in the world. [e ainda assim causaria estragos]”.
On Wednesday afternoon, the light rain that fell in the city grew stronger and again caused apprehension among residents. In an emergency, it is recommended to look for safe places and contact the Civil Defense and the Fire Department, calling 08000230199, 199, 193 or 2673-2203.
