Although several countries have already begun to immunize against covid-19, the Ministry of Health failed in the first attempt to buy syringes and needles for vaccination in Brazil. Of the 331 million units that the portfolio intends to buy, it was only able to offer 7.9 million in the electronic auction held on Tuesday 29. The figure corresponds to about 2.4% of the total number of units that the portfolio wanted to acquire.

Now, the Ministry of Health will have to hold a new event, still without a defined date. The purchase of syringes and needles is generally carried out by the states and municipalities. However, during the pandemic, the ministry decided to centralize these supplies. The forecast of the Minister of Health, Eduardo Pazuello, is to start vaccination against covid-19 in the country in February.

Immunization of the Brazilian population, however, still depends on a vaccine to obtain approval from the National Sanitary Surveillance Agency (Anvisa). It is estimated that 108 million doses are applied in the first semester. In addition to vaccination against covid-19, syringes and needles purchased by the Ministry of Health would be used for the measles vaccination campaign.

The Brazilian Association of the Industry of Medical, Dental, Hospital and Laboratory Articles and Equipment (Abimo) says that since July it alerted the ministry about the need to plan the purchase of vaccines. In the negotiation session on Tuesday, the ministry was looking for offers for different types of syringe and needle sets. Of the 4 items searched by the portfolio, 3 did not have valid proposals.

In these cases, the prices offered may have exceeded the values established by the ministry or the companies did not present the necessary documentation. The fourth article had a valid offer only for a part of the offer. Wanted, the Ministry of Health has not yet ruled on the tender for the purchase of vaccines.
