The two military policemen who overturned the car of the ambulant João Vitor Silva Moreira were removed from their posts today by the Ceará Secretariat of Public Security. The case, whose video went viral on the internet, occurred yesterday morning in Bairro Floresta, in Fortaleza (CE).

In the images, one of the policemen is seen kicking and throwing the fruit that the street vendor was selling to the ground. “You can’t do this to me, no. You are hurting me,” said João Vitor.

In social networks, the secretariat reported that the agents will remain on leave until the end of the investigations. In addition, she stated that she rejects “vehemently” this type of conduct, since “it does not correspond to the values of the Corporation, nor to the attitude of its members.”

“We reaffirm that the circumstances surrounding the case will be investigated quickly and rigorously with due accountability,” the agency concluded.

So far, the authorities have not detailed the context of the police action or what happened before the filming.

Ambulante arrested suspected of attempted murder, says secretary

One day after the video went viral, João Vitor was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, which occurred in December 2019, in Fortaleza, a crime for which he was denounced by the Public Ministry. The street vendor was also prescribed an arrest warrant for an alleged homicide in which the victim’s body was charred in July 2017.

The information of the case was published today on Twitter by André Costa, Secretary of Public Security and Social Defense of the State of Ceará.
