After two weeks of negotiations and speculation, Palmeiras already has a new coach: Portuguese Abel Ferreira, who was at PAOK, in Greece, as previously anticipated objective. In the best Jorge Jesus style, the new commander Alviverde arrives with the mission of changing the team’s philosophy of play. And in addition to being one of Jesualdo’s disciples, former Santos, Abel also promises to continue one of Luxembourg’s main achievements at the club: the use of base boys.

As anticipated objective, Palmeiras managed to negotiate with PAOK and reduce the severance pay for the coach, who will have a contract valid until 2022. The official announcement was made this Friday (30) through the club’s social networks.

At 41, this will be only Abel Ferreira’s third job as a coach on professional teams. Former right-back with a presence in some clubs in Portugal, such as Penafiel, Guimarães and Braga wins, the new commander Alviverde ended his playing career at Sporting in the 2010-11 season. And it was there that he began his career as a coach, in the club’s base categories.

After three years in the new role, Abel has already stood out for his good work with young people and little by little he developed his style of play, inspired by Jesualdo Ferreira, former Santos coach, who is a great example for this generation of Portuguese coaches.

Then, after the good work, the coach accepted a new challenge and moved to lead the B team in Braga, a club where he received his first opportunity to lead a professional team, in 2017-18.

Abel Ferreira Braga

Right in his first season at the helm of Braga’s main team – which is traditionally more modest than the three giants of Portugal – Abel Ferreira made history. He led the club in its historical record in the Portuguese league: 75 points added to finish the competition in fourth place and with a guaranteed place in the Europa League.

In the following season, he left his team again classified for the Europa League, consolidating Braga as the fourth strength of Portugal, behind only Benfica, Porto and Sporting.

After changing his team level, Abel Ferreira moved to PAOK, from Greece, for 2.5 million euros, last season. At the new club, the manager also did an outstanding job, but his most popular feat among Brazilians occurred this year, when he defeated Benfica, newcomer Jorge Jesús, in the Champions League playoffs.

But the new commander Alviverde is not just an ‘executioner’ of JJ. Abel also has an offensive style of play, fast transition and with a lot of movement of the players, and like the former ‘mister’ Flamengo, he also likes to play 4-4-2 with variations for a 4-1-3 . -2, exactly how Rubro-Negro from Rio conquered America in 2019.

Now at Palmeiras, Abel will have the mission of finally implementing an offensive and modern philosophy of play at the club, something that president Maurício Galiotte has already admitted he has been looking for for some time.

But also, another fundamental point of his arrival is his good work with young people, which began from his time in the youth categories of Sporting. In Braga, for example, he was the one who launched Francisco Trincão, one of the great promises of Portuguese football, who is now in Barcelona. At PAOK, he also discovered the young Michailidis (defender) and Tzolis (forward), who now defend Greece’s senior team.

With many quality young people in the cast, such as Gabriel Menino, Patrick de Paulo and Gabriel Verón, Abel will be able to continue what Luxembourg started and improve the transition of young talents to the professional team.

And although the season is already in its final stretch, as everyone knows, the results are essential for the maintenance of any job in Brazil. And luckily for the Portuguese, Palmeiras qualified as the best overall campaign for the Libertadores and has an easy path to the semi-final. Something that can guarantee the continuity of your work.
