At least five years ago, Luciano Castro de Oliveira, 46, known as Zequinha, one of the most wanted men by the Brazilian Justice, with four open arrest warrants, led a peaceful life with his wife, with whom he had been together for more than 20 years, in the city of Tejupá, 280 km from the capital of São Paulo.
According to the Civil and Military Police, who arrested him this morning in a joint operation, Zequinha lived in a mansion on the edge of a dam. He spent the last few years with false documents, showing no wealth, and frequent church attendance. For the police, “he disguised himself as a citizen above suspicion.”
At the time of his arrest, according to the Military Police, Zequinha said he was a gardener and presented false documents. He said it was José Luciano Vitorino Souza, who has, in addition to his identity card, a bank card, a voter card and a false vaccination card, according to the prime minister.
During the execution of a search and seizure order at Zequinha’s house, the police located R $ 18 thousand in cash. The money, according to the prime minister, was distributed at different points in the mansion, including inside a pot kept in a closet.
According to the Civil Police, Zequinha was baptized in a church in the neighborhood where he lived and began to attend it assiduously, without missing a single Sunday. The police officers even went to the church to investigate him in plain clothes.
In the church, according to the police, there were regulars who knew about his past in crime. For these regulars, Zequinha claimed that he had left organized crime to “live a new life.”
For the police, Zequinha may be directly or indirectly involved in several recent crimes that have occurred in the state against banks, transport companies, multinationals and even robberies at airports. Investigations are ongoing into the alleged recent involvement in such crimes.
Police said he was arrested in Avaré. There is the possibility, due to Zequinha’s “degree of danger,” that there are court requests for him to be removed from the state and transferred to the federal prison system.
Wanted since 2006, Zequinha has a long criminal history, he was part of a list of the Ministry of Justice with the 22 most wanted criminals in the country.
