The most expensive border collie in the world is Brazilian, he is five years old and is called Radar. It was sold for R $ 160,000 to a farmer in Pernambuco. The previous price record belonged to the dog Megan, sold from England to a breeder in the United States for R $ 107 thousand.

Trainer Adonis Colombo, the former owner of the animal, says his history with the animal is “a thing of fate.” Radar came into his hands as a puppy and was left alone for 30 days, and was sold to a rancher in Bahia who would recreate him on the farm and then send him off to train. “I bought it sold, but I saw that it was a different dog. He had a very different interaction with animals; He was smart and watched the sheep, “he recalls.

When the border collie finally returned to the training center in Durandé (MG), he performed above normal. “I was ready to compete in tests with four months of training, when the normal is more than 10 months. I told the owner that I had an exceptional dog, I just had no idea how much. When I told him that the value of the animal had doubled, he asked me if I wanted to buy it. And I bought it for R $ 6 thousand ”, he says.

Colombo says he needed an animal to serve as a purse for the training center. “Some dogs corresponded in one respect, but not in others. They treated the ox well, but they did not have the sensitivity for the sheep, “he explains. According to him, Radar helped bring the name of CT to the world, being champion of various events.

Cattle rancher Júnior Ribeiro, from Camocim do São Felix (PE) was looking for a border collie with excellent genetics and ended up hitting the radar. Creator of Nellore and Angus, he entered the world of dog herding after realizing the functionality of these animals in treatment. “The border collie is not an ordinary dog, he has extraordinary abilities, he is an athlete in the field,” he says.

The trainer says selling the radar was necessary to value both the animal and the national pasture. “He is like a soccer player, he cannot sit still, he needs to be more exposed.” It was agreed between them that the animal would continue in Minas Gerais, being trained for tests and champion, since it is still young.

The new owner will have a financial return mainly through the genetics of the animal. “My intention now is to continue the” Radar Project “that will begin in the US, with the aim of storing genetic material not only for Brazil, but for the world,” says Ribeiro.

In addition, baby animals can also be marketed, generating profits for the owner, and he already has more than 80 distributed in various states and Brazilian countries such as the United States, Colombia, Argentina and Bolivia.

Brazil example in the world

The sale was made with the advice of Moura Stock Dog, a training and reproduction center that Maycon Moura, friend and mentor of Adonis Colombo, who lives in the United States, is a part of. He points out that many believe that the best animals to graze are in Europe, where the breed began, but Brazil has the best genetics. “I am a coach, an embryologist, and I say that they do not reach our level. The Brazilian made a fantastic adaptation for them to work on a daily basis, not just as a test dog or toy, ”he says.
