Grêmio and Cuiabá will meet at 7:00 p.m. this Wednesday, at Arena Pantanal, for the first match of the quarterfinals of the Brazil Cup. The Mato Grosso team has among its highlights the midfielder Felipe Ferreira, a 26-year-old player trained in the Tricolor and who experienced one of the most difficult moments of his career for the Rio Grande do Sul team. The player, however, is missing tonight.

Ferreira was caught in an anti-doping test in the Copa do Brasil U-20 match against Vitória, on December 28, 2012. He tested positive for methylhexaneamine, a substance found in a supplement and list of prohibited substances from the World Anti-Doping Agency .

He ended up suspended for eight months by the Superior Court of Sports Justice (STJD) and was removed from the playing field just in the final stage of training, in the Grêmio U-20 team. The punishment shook the player psychologically, for having to pay for something that had not been blamed.

Besides Ferreira, another Grêmio player was also sanctioned for doping, Mateus Oliveira. At that time, Grêmio carried out an internal investigation and dismissed the physical trainer Diego Mello, considered responsible for the episode. However, the STJD dismissed the case after hearing a series of statements from the club’s leaders and did not sanction Mello or Tricolor.

Ferreira, by the way, would be used by the then coach Marcelo Mabília at the start of Gauchão 2014. That team was recognized for throwing some youngsters for Grêmio. Among them, Everton Cebolinha me Luan. The former coach believes that the doping penalty has damaged the player’s career.

– A very skilled midfielder, with a lot of strength, shooting power. He was used a lot with us as a midfielder at 4-2-3-1. This doping situation really affected his career a lot. Without a doubt, it delayed the training process, professional development. But who knows, he has given the necessary maturity to reach that level today. He has many followers in Ferroviária, he had a good performance in Vasco and now he is establishing himself in Cuiabá in a position that we even tried – praises Mabília.

The midfielder even assisted Luan’s first goal in the Tricolor, against Brasil de Pelotas, in Bento Freitas, in a match for the Gaúcho Championship. He received it in the middle and I put the ball behind the defense for the then jersey 7.

Recently, he played for Tubarão, in Santa Catarina, a club from which he moved to Ferroviária, owner of his bond. In 2019 he stood out for the CRB and aroused the interest of Vasco. In a controversial negotiation, he headed to São Januário at the time, but returned to Ferroviária this year. He stood out in Paulistão and arrived on loan to Cuiabá in August.

Another player from Cuiabá with training in Grêmio is Matheus Barbosa. The defender made his debut in the Tricolor professional in 2014 and made two games for the Gaucho Championship. He was borrowed and had no more chances in Tricolor.

– He was always a defender who was always a starter in the lower categories of Grêmio, the Brazilian team. After a while there were some questions about his height. When I took him to Tubarão, he had descended in the second division of the Paulista Championship. I spoke with his manager and wanted to take him to play as a midfielder. And he made a great championship in the Second Division, a great Championship in Santa Catarina later. He went to Avaí, he played the whole series B, he went up. But then, in the first division, the profile is slightly different from that of a steering wheel. There he is again in Segunda making a great campaign – Mabília concludes.
