Congress: Maia wants to vote for the deputy for global access to buy vaccines until next week

“The Brazilian government and Pfizer are advancing their deals with the intention of purchasing 70 million doses of the Pfizer and Biontech vaccine against Covid-19, to be delivered in 2021. The terms are well advanced and should be finalized soon this week with the signing of the memorandum of intent, ”says a note released by the Ministry of Health.

Previously, President Jair Bolsonaro stated that any vaccine that receives the endorsement of the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) will be offered to all Brazilians free of charge.

“If there is Anvisa certification (scientific guidelines and legal precepts), the government will offer the vaccine to everyone, free and not mandatory,” Bolsonaro said on his social networks.

Health Minister Eduardo Pazuello will meet with governors on Tuesday to discuss the incorporation of new vaccine alternatives against Covid-19 and align vaccination strategies in the states.

Logistics: Experts defend creation of structure for adoption of Pfizer vaccine in Brazil

Last week, Pfizer executives accused the Brazilian government of closing a deal to purchase batches of the vaccine as soon as possible. The director of the pharmaceutical company in Brazil, Alejandro Lizarraga, said at the time that the deadline was short, a matter “of a few days, or maybe a week.”
The main argument that Pfizer presented to persuade the Brazilian government to complete the purchase was precisely the period in which the company could deliver doses of the immunizer, which in the United Kingdom begins to apply tomorrow.

In November, the completion of phase 3 trials of the Covid-19 candidate vaccine showed that the efficacy achieved was 95% in preventing the disease and there were no serious side effects. The data from this stage of the study has not yet been published in a scientific journal.

The logistical challenge of the Pfizer vaccine, in turn, was one of the reasons cited by the government for not prioritizing the purchase of the immunizer. The vaccine should be kept at -75ºC, which is comparable, according to experts, to the difficulties in obtaining respirators at the beginning of the pandemic. However, Pfizer says it can supply equipment to facilitate the transportation and storage of your product.

Brazil already has a closed agreement with the vaccine developed by the association of the University of Oxford with the British pharmaceutical AstraZeneca.

On Monday (7), the Governor of São Paulo, João Doria, announced that São Paulo’s vaccination program against Covid-19 will begin on January 25. The Chinese pharmaceutical immunizer Sinovac, produced in Brazil by the Butantan Institute, linked to the São Paulo government, will be used.

Faced with Doria’s announcement, Bolsonaro decided that he would have to present some news from the federal government in response. Then, the president called an emergency meeting for 5:30 pm, at the Planalto Palace, which was attended by ministers Eduardo Pazuello (Health), Braga Netto (Civil House) and Fábio Faria (Communications), in addition to CEO of Anvisa, Antônio. Barra Torres, and the special secretary for Social Communication, Fabio Wajngarten. At the meeting, the president nailed the announcement of the progress of the negotiations with Pfizer, which had already been sewn in recent days. During this meeting there was also a publication on social networks about ensuring the vaccination of “the entire population”.
