In the 80s and 90s, a genre that became very popular in games was beat ’em up, in which you have control of a character and you must defeat all the enemies that appear on the screen to pass the level. In turn, one of the most famous games in this genre was Streets of Rage, which originally came out for Mega Drive and had some adaptations made for Master System and Game Gear.
Almost 30 years after the release of its latest title, Streets of Rage returns with a new game for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PC. Digital look I tried the game and then I told you what you think of it. Check out our review!
History
In Streets of Rage 4 you go through some known scenes from other games like the streets of Wood Oak City and the old pier, which as always are being taken by gang enemies and even by corrupt policemen. The Y twins, who are actually the children of the well-known Mr. X, the villain of the first two games in the series, are already leading this.
To combat this corruption and crime, you will be in charge of some known as Axel and Blaze, who were already available at the beginning of the game and are now former detectives. In addition, two more newbies join his team, Sheryl (Adam’s daughter) and Floyd, who has a kind of binary arm. Here, it’s worth noting, most of the enemies are also the same as in the other games in the series, making everything even more nostalgic.
In addition to playing the main and new characters, something that deserves special mention in Streets of Rage 4 is the ability to unlock the classic characters from the other games, which even have their old moves. So with everything unlocked, you have 12 playable characters in all, motivating you to restart the game more than once until you’ve released them all.
In terms of history, Streets of Rage 4 strikes an interesting balance by bringing in old and new characters, who end up combining well and even having certain interesting relationships, but we won’t go into detail so as not to give you any spoilers. As usual in the series, the villagers of the game have crazy plans, worthy of science fiction, which could be explained more in the course of the game with some additional animations, but that still gives a good story.
How to play
As in the first titles, if there is anything, Streets of Rage 4 does not disappoint in its commands. Before talking about them, first, I have to say that there are two ways of “playing”, which are: modern and classic.
In the modern game, you have a button to drop your special, a button to catch enemies on your back, a button to pick up and throw objects, and finally, a combination of buttons to drop an even more powerful and limited special. The other type of game, as the name implies, is simply “classic” and brings the same commands that you saw in the first three games in the series for Mega Drive with only 3 buttons: jump, attack and special.
Unlike Mega Drive games, one of the most interesting new features in Streets of Rage 4 is its combo system, which is very rewarding and can greatly increase your score as it can consecutively beat your opponents. Also, commando for specials, just like in classic games, consumes your life, but now you have the possibility of recovering it if you manage to hit an enemy without being hit by it.
Despite being a relatively difficult game, which we think is great, Streets of Rage 4 is not as punitive as its predecessors. Here, for each stage, by default, you are entitled to two lives and “continues” infinitely, with every 8,000 points you are given a new extra life.
If you still can’t beat a level, the game allows you to “split” your score in exchange for extra and special lives. This may even be bad for fighting with your friends for the highest score, but you will not end up frustrated with the game and will be able to finish it smoothly.
Personally, to zero out on the game, I used a modern game as it resembles the classic and is “necessary” for a current title to please new players who have had no contact with the original series. In general, all the commands, regardless of the selected mode, have a good response time and it doesn’t take long to get used to them.
Extra modes, soundtrack and extras
To reset Streets of Rage in the past or make it even more fun, it was interesting to play with other people. Therefore, Streets of Rage 4 brings the classic local co-op and also the online co-op, which despite working well, featured several slowdowns and random crashes in our tests.
In addition to story mode, Streets of Rage 4 also has additional modes, some of which launch after you’ve completed the game at least once. Only them:
- Phase selection: you choose which stage you want to play without having to go through other levels;
- Arcade: you must restart the game without continuing, that is, here you only have one chip;
- Boss attack – works as a small campaign mode only against game bosses and with a single life;
- Fight: You can play against other players as if Streets of Rage 4 was a Street Fighter-style fighting game.
In general, the additional modes in Streets of Rage 4 are even interesting, but some of them might receive additional attention. For example, the fighting mode does not add anything very interesting and you are restricted to using the same characters in the game, since it would be very interesting here to be able to use an enemy or even some villain of the game in him.
In addition to the modes, another interesting part of the game is its extras, which have a real art gallery with the characters of the game.
The last of Streets of Rage 4 is its soundtrack, which ends up being sensational and very reminiscent of the songs from other titles. In addition, in the game options, you also have access to the “soundtrack retr”, which leaves all the music in the game in the 16-bit style. If you’re curious about the game’s soundtrack, you can listen to it on the developer’s official YouTube channel.
Completed
Streets of Rage 4 is a game that fans of the saga have been waiting for decades and that surprises in almost all aspects. His story is a true tribute to the old games and he doesn’t care about being realistic, being quite funny, although he might reveal some additional details and have more animations.
The battle mode, despite being an interesting addition, does not allow you to play against the computer or have a small campaign. In return, the game has plenty of extras to unlock and that will make you want to restart it countless times.
