Relatives of at least 20 people who died this weekend in Manaus informed the G1 that, on Monday (27), the coffins with bodies wait to be stacked in the mass graves opened in the Nossa Senhora da Aparecida cemetery, Tarumã neighborhood, west zone. The Manaus City Council reported in a note that, due to the high demand for burials, “it reorganized the design of the graves.”

This Sunday (26), Manaus had the highest burial record since the start of the new coronavirus pandemic. In 24 hours, 140 burials and two cremations were registered in the capital alone, according to the city council, with 10 cases by Covid-19. The number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Amazonas, as of this Monday (27), exceeded 3,900.

Since Monday morning (27), Janecy Lobato has been struggling to bury her father-in-law, who died of lung failure, with dignity. “They said they were going to bury one on top of the other and that we should accept it. This is not worthy. We are citizens who have paid taxes, we have the right to bury our loved ones with dignity. This is inhumane, “he said.

Wanted for G1, the Manaus City Council reported that the bodies will be buried in layers and the mass graves, called trenches, will be deeper. “The Municipal Secretary of Urban Cleaning (Semulsp) reorganized the design of the wells, but maintaining the unity and traceability of all the urns delivered to the Nossa Senhora Aparecida public cemetery,” said the note.

Leonardo García, who is waiting in the cemetery to bury his father, who died of natural causes, also says that the situation disgusts him. “They want to bury several bodies. On top of each other. There is no respect at all. They said there is no space and that the only way out is to bury the stacked bodies. I feel humiliated, despised by the government, “he lamented.

Complaints about lack of structure

With a daily average of 100 burials per day, cemeteries in Manaus are beginning to show signs that there is no structure or manpower to meet demand. This Sunday, the day of the burial registration, a family had to bury their own father, for lack of gravediggers. (See video below)

“Many bodies on top of each other, without any identification. We had to take risks. We had to take risks in the freezer, in the fridge, to identify our father,” Máximo said.

By means of a note, the Manaus City Council said that the situation was “an isolated event” and that it will investigate what happened to take appropriate measures.

Another case pointing to the lack of structure in the city also stemmed from a family complaint: the bodies were placed outdoors outside the morgue in a health unit. According to family members, the bodies were left in the sun and were only removed after complaints from family members. Local management said the photo was taken when the team was taking the bodies to the morgue.

Amazonas registered 95 more cases of the new coronavirus this Monday (27), reaching a total of 3,928 confirmed cases, according to an epidemiological bulletin published by the Health Surveillance Foundation (FVS-AM). The bulletin notes that an additional 16 deaths from Covid-19 have been confirmed, now reaching a total of 320 deaths.

Of the total confirmed cases, 2,091 people are in social isolation or at home. From Sunday (26) to Monday, 52 more people recovered from the disease and are outside the virus transmission period, totaling 1,272 recovered.
