A serious accident that occurred a few moments after the start of the Bahrain Grand Prix spooked Formula 1 fans this morning (29). Haas’ Frenchman Romain Grosjean’s car touched Russian Daniil Kvyat’s AlphaTauri, and crashed into the tire barrier, entering under the guardrail, igniting and immediately splitting in half. The shocking images indicated an explosion at the site.
Grosjean got out of the car nimbly and wearing only one shoe amid the blazing flames. Conscious but struggling to walk, he was seen in an ambulance and at the circuit medical center and voiced his concern among all the other drivers and employees on the grid. The race was immediately stopped with a red flag. It was 29 seconds of the French pilot under fire.
Haas said she had minor burns to her hands and ankles, but was fine at the time of the first date. They removed him from the site of the stretcher, with an oxygen tube and suspected rib fracture. He took a helicopter directly to a nearby hospital.
Gunther Steiner, director of Haas, was the first official voice to speak on the matter.
Romain is fine, I don’t want to make a medical comment, but he had minor burns on his hands and ankles. Obviously, he’s shocked. I want to thank the rescuers who were very quick. The FIA commissioners and staff did a great job, but it was terrifying. “
The race director reported a minimum 40-minute delay because the guardrail was punctured by Grosjean’s car and would have to be replaced by a wall, plus a 10-minute warning before the race returned.
Lewis Hamilton was the first Formula 1 driver to comment on the Grosjean accident on social media: “I am very grateful that Romain is safe (…) the risk we take is not a joke, for you who forget that we put our lives at risk for this sport and for what we love to do. Thanks to the FIA for the enormous strides we have made so that Romain can get out of there safely. “
