‘That doesn’t matter to me,’ Bolsonaro says of Brazil’s delay in vaccination

BRASÍLIA – In one more demonstration that questions vaccination against Covid-19, President Jair Bolsonaro said this Saturday that he does not feel pressured and “does not care” that other countries have already begun to immunize their populations.

The statement came after he recalled that he had already signed a provisional measure that freed R $ 20 billion for the purchase of vaccines and the immobilization of governors, without mentioning any of them by name, who demand a quick approval of the immunizers .

– Between me and the vaccine there is a woman named Anvisa [Agência Nacional de Vigilância Sanitária], which I respect, and some do not want to respect, that’s all – declared Bolsonaro, during a tour of Brasilia this morning.

The president reinforced the argument he has been making that even the manufacturers of the immunizers are not responsible for the side effects of the products. The country already has more than 190.5 thousand deaths from Covid-19 and several states have registered high cases.

Mandetta: ‘We are preparing for a slow virus’, says former minister in an interview

– Nobody pressures me for anything, I don’t care. It is reason, reasonableness, it is responsibility to the people, nothing can be applied to people – he commented.

Bolsonaro repeated in sequence that everything he saw “so far in the vaccines that may be available has a clause that they are not responsible for any side effects.”

When asked if he was referring to the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine case, as he had said in recent days, the president replied that he was referring to “everyone.”

– From what I’ve seen so far, everyone.

Brazil: Understand where you are in line for the Covid-19 vaccine

Brazil has not approved any vaccine so far. No manufacturer requested an emergency or definitive registration request from Anvisa. Globally, countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Mexico, Costa Rica and Chile were more agile in negotiations and alliances and have already begun vaccination against Covid-19.

According to the website Our World in Data, which tracks immunization against Covid-19 globally through different official sources, more than 3.8 million people have already been vaccinated with different formulas against Sars-CoV-2 worldwide. . With the exception of isolated cases, to date there are no significant adverse effects.

Vaccine safety is attested in the third and final phase of clinical trials, and the results are reviewed by health regulators, even in cases where approval is granted in the emergency model.

Statement history

It is not the first time that Bolsonaro has raised suspicions about the possible side effects of immunizers against the new coronavirus through inaccurate or misleading statements. Last Wednesday, the president stated that the best vaccine against Covid-19 is “to contract the virus itself”, which is not correct, given that risk groups have a high probability of progressing to serious disease and the immune response developed due to natural contagion, it does not prevent reinfections.

In the first half of December, Bolsonaro, who opposes mandatory vaccination, publicly defended the need for a term of responsibility signed by Brazilians immunized with approved emergency formulas. The proposal was also defended by the Minister of Health, Eduardo Pazuello, and severely criticized by specialists, who see an attempt to exempt the State from its responsibilities.

– Maybe tomorrow there will be another stopgap measure. It is not mandatory, you will have to sign a term of responsibility to take it. Because Pfizer, for example, is very clear in the contract: “we are not responsible for side effects” – declared the president on the 14th.

The next day, the president said that “he will not receive the vaccine, period”, and that his decision would be a personal problem, despite the infectious nature of the new coronavirus and the possibility of asymptomatic transmission.

More recently, Bolsonaro was even more specific about his reservations with the emergency use of vaccines, although he did not present scientifically based arguments.

– If you turn into a chi … you turn into an alligator, it’s your problem, hey. I won’t talk about another animal, because they’ll think I’m going to talk nonsense here, right? If you become a superman, if a woman is born with a beard, or if a man starts to speak weakly, they have nothing to do with it. Or, worse still, manipulate the immune system of the people – said the president on the 17th.
