A Brazilian was a victim of terrorism in Europe. Simone Barreto had lived in France for 30 years and had just realized her dream of being a chef. Last Thursday (29), in a basilica in the city of Nice, France, his destiny met that of a Tunisian immigrant armed with a knife.
Baiana, born in the Salvador suburb of Lobato, Simone moved to France once and for all when she was 19 years old and had three children in the country.
According to Luis, Simone’s friend, they met on Thursday morning and he asked where he was going. “I go to church to pray for my family and then I go to work. Every day she did that,” Luis said.
At 8:29 a.m. that morning, he was praying with two other people when a religious extremist entered the church armed with a knife. The first victim, a 60-year-old woman, was practically beheaded. Then the murderer turned on the sexton of the Basilica, who was also assassinated. Simone was the third victim.
After receiving several blows, he managed to escape from the church. He went out through a side door and sought help at a restaurant. Simone was rescued within the establishment. An hour and a half after the attack, the last words of the Bahian woman, with a wide and happy smile, were once again about love: “tell my children that I love them.” Simone did not resist and passed away.
