The five suspected of raping a 14-year-old girl in Morro do Cantagalo, in Copacabana, in the South Zone of Rio, on September 27, stated in testimony that they consented to sex with the young woman, after they all drank together in a party. The group surrendered Friday afternoon after negotiating with their lawyers. However, community sources report that drug trafficking has threatened all five. The Civil Police planned an operation, with the support of the Coordination of Special Resources (Core) and an armored helicopter from the corporation, to stop them. The suspects are a 19-year-old man, two 18-year-olds and two minors, one 16 and the other 14.
According to the Civil Police, on the day of the crime there was a party organized by residents of the favela.
– According to the suspects, the party was planned, but the crime was not. Also according to them, the victim approached the slab spontaneously. However, this will be determined. We know that the young woman actually went to the place of her own free will, but not of what the physical and mental capacity of the victim was – said delegate Felipe Santoro da Silva, head of the XIII DP (Ipanema), who is investigating the case.
In testimony to police, the teenager said she drank with the boys and does not remember how she got there. She claims it may have been doped.
– He reported recalling flashes. When she woke up, she noticed that five men were on top of her, taking turns raping her. The victim’s testimony is conclusive and in accordance with the examination of the criminal body carried out at the Legal Medical Institute (IML) – said delegate Antenor Lopes Martins Junior, director of the General Directorate of Police of the Capital (DGPC).
According to investigators, most of the suspects are community residents and already knew the victim. They are all students and have not been through the police.
The prisoners are: Dhonathan Moraes de Araújo Clementino, who turned 18 a week ago; Robert de Souza Brandao Casciano, also 18 years old; and Danilo Luiz Cabral de Souza, 19. In addition to them, a 16-year-old and another 14-year-old were also apprehended.
Chief Felipe Santoro da Silva called the case “a barbaric crime.” According to the investigator, the victim “felt guilty” and therefore took a long time to report the incident to the police.
– The delay was also due to the fact that she was hospitalized and fear of retaliation from the traffic. Only when she felt comfortable did she come to testify – added Antenor Lopes.
The Civil Police still cannot say if the victim was doped. However, researchers will investigate this possibility.
– The concrete thing is: the victim’s testimony was explicit and concrete. They drank and, at a certain point, they went to a slab and there was rape. It was a party organized by the young people themselves. We cannot say if it was doped or not. What we do know is that she passed out and was unconscious when she was raped – Santoro said.
The three adults of legal age must be prosecuted for the crime of rape of the vulnerable, aggravated by collective rape, as well as corruption of minors. The two adolescents, on the other hand, will answer for an act analogous to the rape of the vulnerable. According to the Civil Police, the victim and his family were taken out of the community for safety.
– We are sorry and we sympathize with this girl. This is a barbaric crime that cannot be left unsolved – said Chief Antenor Lopes.
The minors will be transferred to the Police Station for the Victims of Adolescents and Children (DCAV), in the Center. The older ones will be transferred to the José Frederico Marques Public Prison, in Benfica.
