Students doing the following National High School Exam (Enem) will not be able to enroll in the first selection of the University for All Program (Prouni), in the Student Financing Fund (Fies) and the Unified Selection System (SiSU). Enrollment in the programs will take place in January, before the end of the exam, which will have scores posted in March.

The calendar of the Ministry of Education (MEC), announced on Thursday 10, brings the registration dates in Prouni, Fies and SiSU of 2021. According to the schedule, Prouni 2021 will have open registrations from January 12 to 15. SiSU will open from January 19 to 23. Finally, Fies 2021 will receive those interested between January 26 and 29. The Enem test will take place on January 17 and the results will be published on March 29, 2021. The Enem score is one of the selection criteria for programs that qualify a place in higher education (public and private universities).

This means that you will only be able to enroll in early 2020 if you have the Enem score from previous years. Students taking the test for the first time will only be able to count on the programs for places in public and private institutions in the second semester.

The change generated criticism from students. The Brazilian Union of Secondary Students (Ubes) issued a note stating that it received the information “with great amazement.” The organization tries to meet with the Minister of Education, Milton ribeiro, to discuss the decision. “We have already faced a situation of school dropouts, total lack of support, digital exclusion and now that. We do not understand anything. Can we go to college? Or will they take it from us too? which is also the future of Brazil ”, said the president of UBES, Rozana Barroso.

Experts also point out the risk of running out of places in Prouni in the first semester of 2021. The main concern of students is with the offer of places in the second semester. Traditionally, only those that were not completed at the beginning of the year are offered. Prouni 2019, for example, had 243,000 vacancies in the first semester and 169,000 in the second.

The decision of BOY seeks to adapt the Prouni and Fies calendar to the academic year of the universities. Enem would take place in November, but ended up being postponed to January and February 2021 due to the new coronavirus pandemic. Due to this postponement, Enem will only publish the notes in March.
