Vice President Hamilton Mourão (PRTB) said today that states have resources and can buy CoronaVac, a vaccine against covid-19 developed by the Chinese laboratory Sinovac in association with the Butantan Institute, in São Paulo.

Previously, on his social networks, the president had already expressed his dissatisfaction with the repercussions of the negotiations on the agreement mediated by Minister Pazuello for the purchase of CoronaVac. Bolsonaro received several criticisms from his supporters – some said they were “betrayed” – and messages asking him not to be vaccinated caused by a “communist dictatorship.” In response, he said that he would not buy “João Doria’s Chinese vaccine” and that the Brazilian people would not be a “guinea pig.”
Following Bolsonaro’s complaint on the Internet, the executive secretary of the ministry, Elcio Franco, denied any agreement with the São Paulo government and said that what happened was a “protocol of intent” signed with the Butantan Institute. He stressed that the government will not buy vaccines from China.
The letter, signed by the Minister of Health, however, confirmed the purchase intention, provided that the vaccine was authorized by Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency), like any other immunizer.
The president’s decision had a negative impact. The governor of São Paulo, João Doria (PSDB), called for greatness in relation to the controversy over the CoronaVac vaccine and said that the “war” must be against the new coronavirus. “I take this opportunity to ask the president to have greatness and lead Brazil in health, in the resumption of jobs … Our war is against the virus, not politics and not between us. We must overcome the virus.”

Governor João Doria said that the governors’ intention is to wait at least until tomorrow (23) to take action on President Bolsonaro’s decision to cancel the purchase of 46 million doses of CoronaVac.
Doria commented on a possible judicialization of the issue and did not rule out convening the Supreme Court (Supreme Court). “We will wait at least 48 hours. If there is no step back from the federal government on Friday to do what it is supposed to do, support vaccines, including [Instituto] Butantan, which is the vaccine in Brazil, we will know what measures could be adopted, either by São Paulo or by the governors, ”Doria told reporters outside the STF in Brasilia.
