The Secretary of Health of São Paulo, Jean Gorinchteyn, announced on Friday (5) a “war operation” to receive patients with Covid-19 that includes the call for volunteer health professionals. Governor João Doria (PSDB) also announced the creation of a field hospital, which should be detailed next Monday (8).

The secretary asked for help from regional councils of health professionals so that volunteers can help in front-line care and admitted that patients are seen in the corridors of hospitals, as long as they are not left unattended.

“We will continue to open beds in hospitals. We will open anywhere in these hospitals: whether in the amphitheaters, in outpatient clinics or in the hallways. Ah, patient in the hall? There will be a patient in the corridor, what we don’t want is an unattended patient, ”Gorinchteyn said.

“Now we need the support of the regional class councils: the Regional Council of Medicine, the Regional Council of Physiotherapy, the Regional Council of Nursing, to help us with the volunteers. We need help. Because we are at war, ”he said.

The secretary must meet next Monday (8) with representatives of the medical and nursing councils. In a note, the Ministry of Health said that it “offers two volunteer projects created to support hospitals in coping with the pandemic” and that “municipalities can disseminate the projects among professionals in their area” (see the full note at the end of this text).

The president of the Regional Council of Nursing (Coren) said that it will not be easy to find more volunteers because the number of professionals is already insufficient today.

“Today we have a greater demand for professionals, both nursing and medical, due to the high rate of dismissal of these professionals, due to the disease itself. Professionals have been dealing with this pandemic for more than a year. There is already wear and tear, and the market lacks a greater number of hires, ”said James Francisco dos Santos, president of Coren.

The state of São Paulo registered this Sunday (7) the the highest ICU bed occupancy rate for Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic, with a rate of 80%. The value exceeds the previous record of 79.5%, which was recorded on Saturday (6) and also on May 28, 2020, during the first wave of the disease.

The occupancy rate of the ICUs in Greater São Paulo was 81.2% this Sunday. Despite the upward trend, the figure is lower than the peak recorded in May, when occupancy in the metropolitan region exceeded 90%.

In May 2020, although Greater São Paulo had a high ICU occupancy, the percentage in the rest of the state was lower (from 70% to 75%), which allowed the transfer of patients from the metropolitan region to the interior.

The state of São Paulo registered 46 new deaths caused by the disease on Sunday (7), bringing the total to 61,463 since the start of the pandemic. New confirmations in 24 hours do not necessarily mean that the deaths occurred overnight, but that they were accounted for in the system in this period.

The moving average of deaths, which takes into account the records of the last seven days and minimizes the differences in the notifications, is 281 daily deaths on Sunday. The figure is 28% higher than that registered 14 days ago, indicating an upward trend.

According to data from the State Department of Health, 6,051 new cases of the disease were also registered in the last 24 hours, totaling 2,113,738 confirmed cases of the coronavirus since the start of the pandemic. The moving average of daily cases stands at 10,301 this Sunday (7).
