The state of São Paulo confirmed, on Tuesday (26), three cases of Covid-19 related to the variant of the coronavirus Sars-CoV-2 from Amazonas, known as P.1.
Japan was the first to identify the new variant in travelers returning from a trip through the Amazon. The detection was notified on January 10.
The mutations (mainly in the region of protein S, which binds to human cells to invade them) present in the P.1 variant make it similar to the variants found in the UK and South Africa, raising the possibility of increased potential for virus transmission and a possible increase in the number of deaths.
It is important to note, however, that there are still no studies that demonstrate the greater transmissibility of the P.1 variant.
The cases in the state of São Paulo were confirmed after genetic sequencing, carried out by the Adolfo Lutz Institute, of the samples taken from people diagnosed with Covid-19 and treated in the state’s public health service.
The three people had a history of traveling to Manaus or were residents of the city, according to information from the São Paulo State Department of Health.
On Monday (25), the United States also confirmed the detection of the P.1 variant on US soil, in a resident of the state of Minnesota with a history of recent travel to Brazil.
The announcement of the first Brazilian variant registered in the United States came just hours after President Joe Biden reversed the release of Donald Trump and reimposed travel restrictions on passengers coming from Brazilian territory.
Other countries have also applied entry restrictions for fear of the impact of newly discovered variants in the pandemic.
