SAO PAULO – In an online event held this Wednesday (16), Sony announced that the PlayStation 5 will hit the shelves in Brazil on November 19, 2020, at a cost of R $ 4,499 in the Digital Edition version, which only accepts games in digital format. The version of the video game with a disc player will cost R $ 4,999.

The pre-sale already starts this Thursday in some shops in the country. In the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and South Korea the island arrives a little earlier, on November 12.

The announcement comes a day after the Japanese company reported that it will close its factory in Brazil, located in Manaus, in March 2021. Sony will also stop selling televisions, audio equipment and cameras until the middle of next year, after 48 years. presence in the Brazilian market. Only the sales of video games and professional audio and video equipment will remain in the country.

According to the company, the decision aims to “strengthen the structure and sustainability of its business, in order to respond to the rapid changes in the external environment.”

For Rubens Massa, professor at the Getúlio Vargas Foundation’s Center for Entrepreneurship and New Businesses, this movement is natural and the market tends to rebalance with this exit.

“The crisis has generated a moment of reflection for all companies, especially for the big brands. This makes them look for new ways to position themselves and review the business models and operations in each of the regions. Sony will probably work with smaller margins in the country to keep it competitive, ”explains Massa.

Despite the departure, the business unit responsible for the sale and distribution of PlayStation in Brazil will be maintained by the company.

At today’s event, the company also announced Chapter 16 of one of the industry’s best-known role-playing games, “Final Fantasy XVI,” which will be exclusive to PlayStation 5 and will take place in a world with medieval inspiration.

Production cut

According to information from Bloomberg, Sony reduced its estimated production of PlayStation 5 by 4 million units due to Production problems with the system of chips (SOC) designed for the console.

In July, the Japanese giant increased the Orders from suppliers due to increased demand for games in the holiday season and in the months that follow, but with revenue issues for their SOC, production capacity has been reduced.

In a statement sent to Bloomberg, Sony said it had not changed the production number of the PlayStation 5 since the start of mass production.

Its main rival in the segment, Microsoft, revealed the prices of its two next-generation consoles last week. The Xbox Series S will cost $ 299 and the Xbox Series X will cost $ 499. Pre-orders for the new Xbox models begin on September 22.
