The drop in the value of a barrel of oil in the international market begins to reach the pumps of service stations, but not because of the cheap price of derivatives, but because of the violent fall in demand, due to the pandemic, which has forced the consumer into social isolation. A survey by the National Agency for Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) shows that there was a drop in the price of fuels of 8.5% in March. In Braslia, there are service stations that sell gasoline for R $ 3,419 in the application. Most establishments, however, practice R $ 3,599 per liter.

In Brazil, Petrobras has been reducing the value of fuels at the refinery. The last reduction, on March 28, was 5%. Today, gasoline costs R $ 1.08 per liter (excluding taxes and margins of distributors and service stations), the lowest value since October 31, 2011. In the accumulated result for the year, the reduction of 43.5 %. In diesel, the 31.3% drop in 2020. “Petrobras expects this movement in prices to be reflected, in the short term, in the reduction in the final price charged to the consumer,” said the state company.

According to the ANP survey, in the evaluated week, the drop was 2.6% and fuel sold, on average, at R $ 3,439 per liter in pumps, the lowest nominal value since November 2017. This shows that the values of Derivatives for the final consumer are yielding, despite the fact that the drop in Petrobras’ prices in refineries is much greater. In pumps, S10 diesel prices have fallen 8.6% since early March, while the state oil company has reduced its prices at refineries by 16.1% since then.

BR Distribuidora’s demand for ethanol and gasoline is between 30% and 35% lower compared to the periods prior to the crisis, company president Rafael Grisolia said. At the beginning of the implementation of the insulation measures, the demand for fuels fell 60%. The lower drop seen today seems to reflect the increase in movement in urban centers, according to the company. In the case of diesel, the reduction has been around 20% since the beginning of the crisis.

With the continuous fall in oil prices in the international market, Petrobras announced yesterday to distributors that it will reduce, as of today, the price of gasoline in the domestic market by 8%, or less R $ 0.0860, while diesel decreased by 6%, at R $ 0.0960.
