Smoke from fires reaches SP and can cause ‘black rain’

The smoke from the fires that hit the Pantanal reached the southeast and notably the city of São Paulo, as it happened in August last year with the particulate material coming from the Amazon. Yesterday a thicker smoke was already visible throughout the capital. The expectation is in relation to the possibility of “black rain” until next Sunday throughout the municipality.

“The atmospheric conditions brought winds from the Midwest. With the rain forecast for the next few days, it is possible that there will be a ‘black rain’, that is, with soot, which will be easily observed on the cars, ‘explains Climatempo meteorologist João Basso. Thus, the orange sky is a mark of the arrival of this pollution.

The phenomenon of “black rain” already occurred in some areas of Rio Grande do Sul last weekend, and it was also seen in the city of São Paulo on August 19, 2019. The difference is that at that time the fires that stood out came from the north, from the Amazon, and the phenomenon coincided with a great cold front and a great rainfall over the city. The outlook is that the rain will be less concentrated, closer to what is seen in the summer, according to Basso.

The perspective is also that once again the wind cycle in the Midwest carries smoke to the south of the country. The National Meteorological Institute (Inmet) reported that satellite images and wind direction models show the movement of pollution towards all states in the region.

According to Climatempo’s assessment, it is also possible that there is an increase in the smoke layer today in areas of Rio de Janeiro, especially in the central-southern part of the state, including the capital of Rio de Janeiro, and over the central part- south of Minas and the Minas Triangle.

Satellite images from the US space agency (NASA) indicate this week that the smoke caused by the fires in the Pantanal and in the Amazon, in Brazil, already reaches the middle of the South Atlantic and can rapidly approach the African continent. The weather condition will cause a drop in temperature next week, but there is a chance that it will rain only in October in the Midwest.
