Sivep, which explains deaths from covid-19, is ‘inaccessible’

With the systems of the Ministry of Health damaged by an alleged attack by hackers since last Thursday (5), the government of São Paulo reported today that the Sivep (Information System for Epidemiological Surveillance of Influenza) remains “inaccessible”, affecting the Daily disclosure of new infected and dead due to the new coronavirus in the state.

Sivep is used by health services and municipalities to notify the Ministry of Health about serious cases of Influenza (flu) and, in the pandemic, about cases and deaths caused by covid-19. This system also reports the number of patients who need hospitalization in hospital beds and medical assistance, as well as those who died after being infected.

As covid-19 is a notifiable disease, according to the definition of the Ministry of Health itself, the information related to it must be registered in the Sivep or e-SUS, depending on the evolution of the case: if it is serious, in the former; take it, in the second. That’s where states get updates on new infections and deaths posted daily.

But, according to the São Paulo government, only the e-SUS works normally. The state claims to account for a total of 1,147,451 cases of covid-19, 21,515 of which were registered in the period between the last 6 and the present. The death toll, pulled from Sivep, was last updated five days ago, having stood at 39,717 since then.

“Yesterday (9), the São Paulo Health Secretariat reiterated, by letter to the Ministry of Health, the request for standardization of the system. The agency had indicated normalization until today (10), but this has not happened until now. The problem it has hindered the spread of cases and deaths related to the disease in various places in Brazil, ”the São Paulo government said in a note.

The obstacle, according to the federal government, is related to the Sivep server, which is undergoing adjustments in the security layers. With this, the technical teams of Epidemiological Surveillance and Information Technology of the São Paulo Department of Health cannot yet log in to access the system and extract the data.

The situation still affects the notification of 645 municipalities in São Paulo, according to the government.

Restoration of part of the ministry systems.

Previously, the Ministry of Health reported that it managed to restore part of the information systems that were down, without mentioning Sivep. Yesterday, in a note, the folder said that the other pages were not yet fully normalized and might, eventually, need adjustments.

“Due to the prevention and security work carried out by DataSUS (Information Technology Department of the Unified Health System), some pages may still present instabilities in the coming days and be temporarily unavailable,” he said.
