At least one person died and four were injured after giant shelves collapsed on customers in a supermarket in the city of São Luís, Maranhão, on Friday night (2).
The accident occurred around 8:15 p.m., during peak hours, inside the Mix Atacarejo supermarket, in the Vinhais neighborhood. The store is part of the largest supermarket chain in the city.
In the images from the security camera you can see that attendees and people who went shopping in the check-out rooms hear a noise and pay attention to the shelves, running after.
The Fire Department, the Urban Mobile Service (Samu) and the Military Police were called in to help rescue the victims. The number of dead and wounded was released by the governor of Maranhão, Flávio Dino. His identity has not been released.
Through a note, the Mateus group regretted what happened, specifying that all the public security authorities of the state were summoned to provide relief and rescue the injured. “Right now what matters is the rescue of the people involved in the accident, the support for the victims and their families,” the document says.
