Serra recommends a 14-day lockdown and a ‘radical change’ in vaccination

The former Minister of Health, José Serra believes that Brazil should make a blockade, a total restriction of circulation, to combat the covid-19 pandemic. He also suggested a “radical change” in vaccination to solve the problem in Brazil.

“The Ministry of Health seems distant and lost. That is why I do not see any other way than a total confinement of 14 days, at least, for the results to be evaluated, from there, ”José Serra told the newspaper O Globo.

The newspaper heard from other health ministers about the pandemic. José Gomes Temporão, Alexandre Padilha and Luiz Henrique Mandetta agreed with Serra on the need for a temporary closure.

They also criticized the Minister of Health, Eduardo Pazuello. Serra regretted having followed the orders of President Jair Bolsonaro (without a party), who always minimizes the severity of the pandemic.

“Pazuello has followed the president’s script, which, we already know, is not acceptable to combat the pandemic”, declared Serra, supported by Mandetta: “there had to be a speech by the president, the minister. National propaganda, with mea culpa” .

Alexandre Padilha believes that the federal government should create a national crisis committee, but Temporão believes that this idea would not advance. Mandetta cautions that an “informal parallel command” would not have enough tools to make changes. Serra understands that this would only produce results if there was a change in priorities.

“It’s a viable idea and it would help. But it won’t do any good if we keep trying to balance health and the economy. It’s a top priority for health,” Serra asked.

When asked if it is possible to accelerate the covid-19 vaccine in Brazil, the former ministers said yes and made suggestions.

“We would need a radical change in the position of the federal government, which must seek to buy vaccines without creating bureaucratic obstacles! Only the vaccine will get us out of this chaos. More than 250,000 Brazilians are dead. The government cannot remain indifferent,” Serra protested.

Padilha pointed out that there should be a negotiation to buy the vaccines Pfizer, Janssen and Sputnik 5, in addition to increasing the quota in Covax, a consortium of the WHO (World Health Organization). Brazil has the lowest possible quota for this project, 10%.

Mandetta doesn’t see much of a chance for change and made a curious comparison to point out when vaccination will enter at an appropriate rate. “Only in August we will have a good amount of vaccine. The virus is from Ferrari, and we will be in a wagon. In June we will have a Beetle.”
