For now without a place in the 2021 Formula 1 season, despite scoring in 13 of the 14 races he competed, with two podiums and a victory this year, Sergio Pérez let off steam after winning the Sakhir GP. The Mexican did not have his contract renewed by Racing Point, which will be renamed Aston Martin and hired German Sebastian Vettel, and is still negotiating with RBR for next year in place of the contested Alexander Albon. Without words, Pérez stated:

“It can be very difficult, and the best drivers are not in Formula 1, unfortunately. So we keep pushing and delivering, and I think that’s the best way to do it.”

Pérez also recalled the case of Esteban Ocon, who shared with him the podium in second position at Sakhir: in 2019, the Frenchman lost his place at Racing Point to Lance Stroll after the driver’s father bought the team and did not race the season . returning this year for Renault:

– I’m in peace with myself. I think Esteban (Ocon) mentioned that drivers like him lose seats, this is Formula 1.

The Mexican reaffirmed that, although he is struggling to stay in the starting eleven in 2021, he would calmly face a sabbatical to return the following season, when a new regulation will come into effect, with completely different cars.

– I already have some good options for 2022, so my best option is obviously to continue next year. But if I have to stop, then it’s not a disaster, I can come back in 2022. The regulations are going to change so much that, somehow, I don’t think it will hurt driving so much, get into the rhythm – he concluded.

At Sakhir, Sergio Pérez became the first Mexican to win a Formula 1 race since Pedro Rodríguez in the 1970 Belgian Grand Prix with a BRM.

Despite losing two races of the season to contracting coronavirus, Pérez is fourth in the table this year, with 125 points against 74 for his teammate Lance Stroll, third in last Sunday’s race.
