Arolde Oliveira (PSD-RJ), a senator who died yesterday from complications caused by covid-19, used to question the severity of the new coronavirus. An ally of President Jair Bolsonaro (without a party), he defended the use of chloroquine and criticized the practice of social isolation.
When the pandemic hit Brazil, Arolde spoke about it on Twitter.
Chloroquine
In one of the publications he defended the use of hydroxychloroquine, which has never had a scientifically proven effect in the fight against covid-19.
“The treatment of Covid-19 with chloroquine divides the opinion of the experts. I remain with the suggestion of using the drug from the beginning, as President Jair Bolsonaro wants, in addition to selective social isolation. Why? Why is there to solve today thinking about tomorrow. Today it is urgent to save lives; tomorrow, to save jobs, income and companies. These two waves, health and the economy, are already intertwined and signal misery, hunger and chaos, “he said. Arolde.
Isolation and “Chinese virus”
In another post, Arolde criticized social isolation, a recommended practice around the world to reduce the impact of COVID-19.
“The figures of the Chinese virus in the world and in Brazil demonstrate the futility of social isolation. Authorities, alarmists for convenience, destroyed the productive sector and created millions of unemployed. President Jair Bolsonaro, isolated by the STF, was right from the beginning” declared the senator.
Numbers in doubt
In August, using the pejorative term “covidão” adopted by President Bolsonaro’s allies to refer to corruption cases related to the pandemic, Arolde posted a comment questioning the number of deaths attributed to the pandemic.
“Covidão effect? Total deaths from April to July in 2019, 437,433, and in 2020, 491,336, an increase of 53,903. As if the enemies of Brazil celebrated 100,000 deaths just from the Chinese virus? I think many people will answer for the crime of corruption and even murder. Let’s hope … “
“Electoral use”
Arolde also denounced that politicians allegedly used the pandemic for electoral purposes, but did not give a name. The demonstration repeated Bolsonaro’s speech, who throughout the pandemic criticized mayors and governors who determined the closure of economic activities.
“The electoral use of the pandemic masks the true intentions of the authorities. Note that behind a demagogic pronouncement there is always a candidate for some position. No need to mention names. Attention, not everything that glitters is gold ”.
The senator also attacked journalist Ricardo Noblat for criticizing President Jair Bolsonaro.
Arolde was 83 years old and had been admitted to the hospital since October 4, until yesterday he suffered multiple organ failure. He was the first congressman from Brazil to die as a result of covid-19.
Covid-19 in Brazil and around the world
According to data from the press consortium, Brazil yesterday reached a total of 5,300,649 cases of coronavirus and 155,459 deaths from the disease.
The country has the second highest number of COVID-19 deaths in the world, behind only the United States, and is the third in number of positive diagnoses, behind the United States and India, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
